The gearstick is very stiff but it goes into all them, when the car is in gear and moving there is a grinding sound but its not there when the clutch is pushed in, apparently the clutch cable has been changed recently as it snapped on the previous owner less than 500 miles ago basically. the clutch pedal only has to be bought off the floor about an inch maybe less for the car to be pull off etc.

I'm hopeing its not the gearbox but can anyone see the problem here from what i have described? the clutch slipped on a few occasions about 1k ago but only on full boost at about 3k.

could it be someone hasnt fitted the cable correctly?

thanks

Mark.

P.S its a top change MK1 turbo

It could just be the clutch plate bearing that also doesnt start turning unless you lift the clutch. I would have the cluch checked first. and if there good they wont destroy it by prising it out with a philips screwdriver and a hammer like eric christers did to my sisters brand new cluch.

Does the gearlever still feel stiff with engine off and car stationary? Maybe the linkages need greasing. There's a bellcrank on the steering rack mounting, plus the connection to the gearbox itself (under the round rubber cover) is sensitive to greasing (or lack of).

The clutch engaging soon after the pedal comes off the floor is a good sign - means the linings aren't worn out - however, the clutch pedal should rest at a height close to that of the brake pedal (or perhaps 1cm below). If the clutch pedal is too low, it means your cable probably needs tightening (this should solve your problems if the clutch isn't disengaging fully).

Unfortunately the clutch slipping is not explained by any of the above - makes me wonder if you may have the wrong release bearing installed. Mine did, and my clutch was slipping for most of the time despite not being worn out at all (when I removed it, grooves were still there). The tell-tale sign of the wrong release bearing is if the adjuster nuts are perched on the very end of the cable...

Finally, the alarming grinding sound... could you explain further? At all speeds? Do you mean when changing gear "when the car is in gear and moving" - does this mean without the clutch pedal being pressed at all? If so, I agree with FalconII - it sounds like a faulty release bearing. Sorry!

Fortunately, taking the gearbox out will only take you a few hours...

I sorted out the clutch cable so the pedal feels right now and the linkages have been sprayed with WD40 and it seems to have made it much less stiff now, I'm going to grease the linkages all up and hopefully it should sort the problem :)

Will likely be the vertical gearlinkage on the external back of the gearbox. Two nuts to remove when you disconnect the linkage ends then remove from car and work free in a vice using WD40. Once back together you won't believe the difference!

Good advice, but that's for the non-Turbo Uno models up to '88-ish for the Uno 70, and up to '92 for the Uno 45. ;)

Also as noted, check the dates of messages... :p
