1.0ie G/Box

Hi,
I think the g/box in my rally car my be knackered, during the Yorkshire endurance rally (what an endurance of 24hrs it was !!!, two broken wheels, two bent TCA's and pushing the rear-beam back when in a hedge !!! ) Towards the end the g/box was making a lot of noise in 1st, 2nd and 3rd, ut 4th and 5th and reverse were fine.

Could this be the bearing on one of the lay-shafts ???

Guess i'm going to have to change it ? Anyone got a later style gearbox ??? The one fitted to the 999cc ie Uno's with a puch-down reverse.

BTW came in 13th O/A, out of 38 starters, and the only 1 litre car, all the rest being 1.3's or 1.4's

Re: 1.0ie G/Box

My understanding is that the input shaft bearing (behind the bellhousing) is usually the first to go, since it's the smallest bearing and comes under axial loads from the clutch. The symptom is to have more noise in the lower gears than the higher gears (which is what you have, of course).

I reckon you should take the gearbox apart, and get that bearing to a bearing shop, to see if they can supply a new replacement - might give the gearbox a new lease of life! If you're keen, you can also inspect the other bearings in the process.

I actually haven't seen a later-style gearbox - so good luck with finding a spare!

I have a K plate uno 1.0 in Thirsk, North Yorkshire which has gearbox and engine still fitted! Are you in Yorkshire mate? If it is of interest, you can ring me on 07818 043178. There are other parts on the car that I will not need, so could probably let you have some for free if you need. I am pretty sure it is the start model that has the push down reverse, but can check as soon as the mechanic gets off his hols next week.
