5th gear into reverse?

Hello, owners of uno's will be able to tell me, how do you get reverse gear?
Sounds nuts I know, but I pull up on the stick, push down on it and nothing, it just seems to slip in from other gears. This cant be normal, I would hate to be changing down from 5th to find reverse.
Thanks for your help

Re: 5th gear into reverse?

Lots of older cars have no reverse inhibiter, you can just jump straight into it from any gear.

TBH, i drove for years with a box like that, and never did it once, so it can't be that common.

If you did, the box would be spinning so fast you'd prob break the stick trying to engage, before you got the cogs to bite. All you will prob get is a nasty noise and a bit of wear. I personally don't think it will wreak the box.

Maybe someone with more experience will know more though.

The modify it shoudn't be too hard if you really need that feature though, probably a pull up collar would the the easiest DIY to do!

Re: 5th gear into reverse?

Well, the Mk2 Uno after 1993 had a reverse gear inhibitor (999cc and 1108cc FIRE engine versions)... I think you push the gearlever down to operate a cable.

As for the other models - no inhibitor - when you pull the lever out of 5th, the spring pressure centralises it ready for 4th, so there's really never a problem. I agree with kritip.

I don't think the lacking of an inhibitor is an 'old car' feature since the FIAT 128 (1969-81) had a strong spring on the gearlever and a sturdy gate - you had to push the lever down and then move it across to reverse (and there was no 5th gear).

Re: 5th gear into reverse?

yeah, welcome to the forum!
I think we've had more new members in the last month than in the year before.

Please tell me - do you have a diesel motorbike? I've never heard of such a thing! Is it really economical but 'slow' acceleration? What next - a diesel chainsaw?

Re: 5th gear into reverse?

The mini has a reverse gear inhibitor its a little lump of metal in the gear stick box (and if you put the bottom plate on backwards it becomes a 1st and 2nd gear inhibitor )

To be totally honest I think the risks are next to nothing anyways coz there isn’t a syncro on reverse just some rounded cogs which will simply yell at you if you should try...

Re: 5th gear into reverse?

Mine 84'uno has no inhibitor but its not so close to the 4th gear, i dont think you can make that kind of mistake! Also i think that you just cant push it into reverse at high speed cos if i try to push it in reverse while still going forward (slowly, on the clutch while parking) it makes ugly noise, you have to stop completly before you can push it into reverse without resistance!

Re: 5th gear into reverse?

yea on my uno 92 93 there is a mechanism that will not alow 5th to reverse untill you alow the gear shifter to fully centralise and the go for it

there is a cable system so you have to push down and then fully right then back for reverse

apsolutly fool proof

if you do manage to let the gear stick centralise and then go for reverse anyway from 5th throu some crazy notion you are driving a 6 speed all you will wear is the sincro ring and these are easaly replasable espesaly 5th and reverce wich can be done with the gear box in situe simply by removing the plate from the end of the gear box

beter than a golf anyway revercse is left from 1st and you have to push down again to get their but all that is stoping you if you dont is a flimsy pease of plastic

picture the scene. your at the lights your best mate puls up in his car so you get the engines revin ready for a race and in your haste to got for 1st you hit reverse and set of backwards into the car behind lol
