Re: smoking uno turbo

If this isn't particularly on warm up then sadly its your rings IMO.

My opinion is based on exactly the same problem a friend had with his mk2. He was advised he needed to rebuild his head and when that didn't help he bought a new turbo... Turned out to be the rings.

Its tricky to give a diagnosis without seeing the car but when does it smoke exactly? If its smoking first thing in the morning on start up then its most likely to be worn valve stem oil seals, this is when oil seeps down into the cylinder overnight and gets burned off and usually clears up after driving the car for a while until the next day.

If its smoking on acceleration then it could be the turbo or turbo oil seals. If you accelerate and then let go of the throttle and see it chuck out lots of blue smoke then its probably your turbo or a faulty wastegate.

If it smokes constantly on idle it might be a blocked breather pipe or as Tom says the Piston rings may need replacing. Smoking on load or acceleration is usually a sign of worn piston rings.

Check the condition of the spark plugs as they can tell you a lot as to the condition of the engine from within. I think normally they should be a brownish colour, any oil would mean your piston rings are worn out, black means your running too rich and white is a weak mixture iirc. Let us know how it goes

Re: smoking uno turbo

the car does not smoke on start up at all after it has been parked up.it only smokes when engine up to operating temperature and only on idle, does not smoke under load and doen not smoke on deceleration, only on idle.it is a lightblue smoke and smells of oil as soon as you rev the car a few times it dissapears but comes back again, reminds me of an old ford sierra lol

Re: smoking uno turbo

Maybe clean out the crankcase breather (round aluminium pot on the front of the engine block). Check that the pipe from this to the induction is clear. Pressure might be building up and bypassing the rings.

Re: smoking uno turbo

Good call Alex. If the car is standard and not really been played with it might never have been cleaned. I've never found a blocked though but hopefully thats the problem.

Re: smoking uno turbo

gave engine oil and filter change and flushed it out, removed all breather pipes and cleaned them out as well, unfortunatley still the same, think seals have gone in turbo, not down on power though,white/blue smoke on tickover ok on acceleration under load and decelleration?? will keep running it till she goes bang lol

Re: smoking uno turbo

Its most likley the turbo IMO. Check if you can see a damp patch around the turbine housing bolts somewhere.

Check the plugs, if they are deposit free, its very likley to be the turbo.

Re: smoking uno turbo

blue smoke usually indicates to a failiure in torbocharger's work. can't tell anything more specific, but you really should contact a repair service right away. before it might be too late. I wrecked my IHI turbocharger somehow;( and I can't find a replacement turbo from any where. so be careful mate.
