Side skirt attachment holes in sill...

Right i have and made wide arches which no longer suit my mk1 side skirts so i binned them. Whats left is 5 or so small holes in the sill where they used to attach which i need to get rid of.

Question is whats the best way IYO?

I've thought of using a magnet to hold a small piece of metal behind the hole and tacking it in place with a welder and finishes it of will a skim of filler.. I just wonderd if someone else had better idea...? One that avoided me (with my endless talent) trying to weld a tin can

Re: Side skirt attachment holes in sill...

All the filler would push through into the sill chamber, i just wouldnt trust it and imagine it being messy...

Re: Side skirt attachment holes in sill...

If they are small screw holes wouldn't a quick quick weld fill the hole?

Re: Side skirt attachment holes in sill...

Maybe just get some solid plastic/rubber grommets/ blanking plugs to do the job? The advantage of using these is that you will have easy access to the inside of the sills and can spray ant-rust was inside easily

Re: Side skirt attachment holes in sill...

There are holes o the underside of the sills too so i am going to just get rid of them completely i think. I did hatch an idea for a short period of time that a very small amount of expanding foam would maybe do the job but i came to the conclusion it might trap water..

Re: Side skirt attachment holes in sill...

Get rid of what completely?

I covered the side holes with 'sikkaflex' (polyurethane sealant) when sticking the plastic sill covers on. They are great big ovals too! Can't understand why FIAT bothered to put them there - the sill covers don't seem to use them (or maybe all the hooks broke off long ago.)

I'm sure you could just use fibre-reinforced 'metal' filler (the grey stuff) as custard boy said - put a large blob on and sand it down flush, coat of etch primer to protect the steel, then a couple of layers of sprayed-on stonechip coating (shutz gun) and it will look great. It's surprising how strong those reinforced fillers are these days.

Re: Side skirt attachment holes in sill...

Thanks for your repy, everyone is very helpful on here

I used the wrong phrase, 'to get rid of the hole'. I meant if i weld it, thats it i dont every have to worry about the filler falling out into the sill or shrinking etc.. The sills are so thin and the gap behind is pretty large that the filler no matter how strong wouldn't have a lot to grip onto unless a massive lump was pushed through.

The holes were all used on my uno as i had to break each clip to remove the skirt.

I'm really looking forward to it being sprayed, its such a clean look with no plasic trim.
