Sounds like the infamous vacuum diaphragm on the distributor has failed - a very common fault. This has been covered many times before, and if you do a thread search for 'vacuum diaphragm' you will find some "how to's" and instructions for testing and replacing the unit.

To check the diaphragm, pull off the vacuum pipe from the carburetor that runs to the distributor. The pipe should be connected to a circular unit on the distributor itself.

Leaving the pipe connected to the distributor, blow or suck from the other end. If resistance (vacuum) is felt, then the diaphragm is ok. If you can continue sucking or blowing air then the diaphragm is shot and is most likely to be the cause of your problem.

Also, check the pipe itself for splits as this can cause the same symptoms.

Best of luck!

hi,my daughters 1993 uno 1108cc / ies /50 just keeps cutting out as though starved of petrol -being a single point injection using a webber carb i suspected the ecu or crankshaft senser which lipscombs fiat maintaines is not shown as fitted !!!!!! even my local parts outlet has no listing for either???? clearly this is a nonsense because what else would operate the webber and other sensers.Plugs, leads, oil,DISTRIBUTER CAP all changed, earth connections cleaned.there is no consistence,it can stop after 100yds or 1/2hr of driving, fuel filter changed.latest is on tickover on cold day engine revs die down then increase then rad fan starts with engine not hot after 5min then engine revs increase and so on,so clearly A control SOMEWARE is misbehaving-can you help.

hay chas is the vaccum advance also a problem on the 1988 60s 1116cc model as well??

Hi guys, I just bought a Uno 1100 few weeks ago. At first it had a bad idling as a result I had to keep my foot on the accelerator then time and again engine would stall now it cranks by not firing; when I turn the key off it is as if its about to start. At first I changed the ECU nothing happened, then I fitted a new petrol pump and even call an electrician to check the wires (he found no fault on wires) He suspected a mechanical matter carburetor being a 'suspect'. Could this be caused by vacuum advance/carburetor. Anyone please help, U can drop me an email as well to: [email protected]

Cars with electronic ignition !
Note:
It´s most likely a worn butterfly valve sensor.
Get a proper working injection unit an replace it.
Service all parts like filters , spark plugs and so on.
Check for corrodes cables an broken hoses.
Then reset the ECU by shortening the battery + cable to ground
for 30 sec. Then restart the engine without cutting out till it starts.
Let it run till the cooler fan turns on twice.
The ECU will learn to work perfectly on your engine.
