Acetone

You may of heard the claims about adding acetone to your fuel will increase your mpg by up to 35%

Well it may but it wont save you any money!
(Here comes the science)

If my uno does 40MPG @ £1 a litre, a full tank is 40 litres so £40 for 352.42 miles

(UK gallons is 4.54 litres)

The acetone cost £1.26 for 50ml i need 100ml for a full tank

Hang on you ask your self that's the cost of about 3 litres of petrol! Hmmmmmmm

So unless i have a gain of 26.43 miles a tank further it wont be worth my money!

So in summary i need a 7.49% increase (decrease really) in consumption for it to be worth me thinking about!

So from 40MPG i need 42.8MPG

But i am still gonna try it! I am filling right up tonight with Esso's Finest and adding my acetone.

Later on i will post my milage when i do it and we will all see exactly what gains are to be had!

(Plus i looked like a weirdo buying what is basically nail varnish remover in Boots)

PS. Only use 100% Acetone if your going to try this!

PPS. Don't know if its legal either! I know it won't increase my emissions but i am supposed to declare it and
pay fuel tax on it! Much like the Chip-fat diesel which for all your info works a treat but stinks to high heaven!

Make sure you get the mixture correct as too much will decrease your mpg . Too much additive would upset the mixture ratio because acetone (like alcohol) is a light molecule and tends to lean the mixture.
Good luck and look 4ward to your results.
Remember less is more.

Re: Acetone

!!!!!! is all i can say

Ok i didn't believe the claims about this stuff however some of you will know my uno fire 999cc has done 100800 miles now and after this stuff went in at about 5pm today i didn't notice a difference until . . . . the car sat for a while whilst i was busy about 1hr after getting home from filling up, then i got in it and ragged of as per normal coz my engine is chronic from cold (bad alt, no hot air feed rubbish filter etc) and i didn't notice difference till i drove from Liverpool to Southport (15 miles) and back, when i got back the engine was revving normally and the intermittent power i always get was well smoother (not smooth) hmmm i think to myself so i whipped a spark plug out and low an behold its sparkling and i mean clean no deposits etc now these plugs have been in for about 40,000 miles coz i am waiting for the engine to go pop so i can justify to my missus a new turbo one.

Coincidence? My imagination?

Any thoughts or is it coz i am paying attention to every little noise?

PS i spilt some acetone on my wheel trims (I like my car to LOOK standard not go standard) and it took ALL the paint of DOH should of used a pipe! What was i thinking basically a paint stripper and i don't take any care!!!

PPS Obviously i tried acetone coz on some level i want my engine to pack in and i am not advocating any one to do the same so don't blame me!!!

Will.

FIRE engines are supposedly good for 200,000 miles with regular servicing! Yours is only half way there

Re: Acetone

Well you may remember i needed a 7.49% improvement in my miles per gallon which is 42.8 mpg. The result is in and i have double checked my maths,

I got 41.2 mpg!!!

My original mpg was 39.81 so this is a 3.49 increase in mpg

So my summary is this - use acetone i believe it cleans your engine, mine sound a whole lot better, but don't rely on it to pay for its self because mine didn't it would of been better for me to just buy more fuel!!!!

I would however consider using an engine cleaning treatment next time!

Will.

Re: Acetone

The real test will be the next tank without acetone - do you then get the same result, I wonder.

If so, then perhaps the engine cleaning has really improved things!
Or if not, then perhaps acetone had no effect!

Sort of damned-if-you-do and damned-if-you-don't, really
