(G) how do i find out what size my engine is?

i brought a mk1 fiat uno turbo but im not sure if its 1299 or 1301? its an e reg one on ebay where i got it from it says 1299 but i cant find any gasket sets for the 1299cc versions only the mk2 engines and 1301cc

could anyone help me with this?

Another 1299 Owner and taking the head off too .

It's a very similar engine to the 1301 - I'm not sure exactly what is different . I think it’s a different stroke .

For the price of new stretch head bolts, you may as well get them too! :-

I have my 1299 head off at the moment. It’s side by side with a 1301 head (apparently). They share the casting number of 7565852 on front left, 1342 in the middle, and 85 above plus 1. Between valves 6 and 7 there is ‘S 73’ in raised in the casting.

Now I’m not sure if my spare head is off a 1299, or a 1301 .

Have you had any quotes for a head skim yet?

PS the 1299 is found only in the earlier MK1 Uno Turbo .

my gear box has the changer from the bottom and its from a e reg mk1 s i guess its a very old engine

i need tensioner aswell :S as the engine is completely out of the car im going to clean it up get it acid dipped and skimed.

my dads mate done my head skim on my old cinq for £40

going to ask if he can do this one too.

The gasket sets are the same. There is no significant difference between the engines.

Do you have any pictures of where your up to . Would be interesting to see.

Thinking about the tensioner, there is a possibility that they are available within non-FIAT cambelt kits.

Failing that, it’s also possible that a bearing from another assembly could fit the bracket… just a case of finding which ...

OK I’ve had a look at my spare MK1 Tensioner (left), and my yet to be fitted FIRE 999 tensioner (Right). I have yet to do a can belt, but it appears that you only get the bearing anyways.



I can’t make out the name on the old tensioner, but as you can see the FIRE one is stamped “BREDA LORETT ITALY 193 / 05”. I’m not having much luck researching them at the moment… Itallian isn’t my strong point . Sure we will find new tensioners for our Unos … Any help will be appreciated you guys

so you only get the bearing then :\ hmmm might have to go to leicester bearings to see what they can do me ill get the new one from the guys at desra and ill take it to the bearing peeps to see if they stock same size if so ill get a couple as theyll be under £10 for deffo

to see what im upto try the seicento>styling section its called my project seicento which the engine will hopefully be home in when done, im going to strip the engine down as much as possible and clean it as best i can as it looks a right state at the mo, will have samco hoses and a dump valve when done just what im going to do is strip the engine, check to see if pistons are spot on, change any bearings that need doing, new cambelt, new pully belt, good lick of paint on the block, new sparkplugs, new intercooler (still sourcing a nice size one)

just wondering how do people clean engines when they are rusty? steam clean only gets the grease off, when i sent my old cinq's head in to be skimmed it come back like new it was bright bare metal as if it was new, how do they clean them up like that?

Just to clarify, the tensioner for the 1.3 Turbo is not available through the FIAT dealer network (according to Desira). The above new tensioner is different, and is for the 1.0 FIRE that I got form Shop4parts .

I’m presuming that as Andy hasn’t offered an alternative, they can’t supply a 1.3 bearing .

I’m yet to get a price on a head skim . I think they dip the head in acid to get it all shiny, but I can’t say for sure.

It’s a different story for the block as its ferrous. Mine is all rusty inside . I’m not sure if its normal and can be ignored .

Keep us updated on the progress . I’m going to take a look at your other thread .

I think the bearings are exactly the same for most models. I replaced the bearing on a 999cc fire engine using a good second hand one from a Punto 90ELX!!! Which I thinks has the same engine type as the Uno turbo (with some modification).

I replaced the bearing on the punto because I think it has an interference type engine (so it was a precaution) but I couldn’t be bothered buying a new bearing for the FIRE so I just used the puntos old one (which seemed fine).

You only replace the bearing because its the bit that wears out, the bracket doesn't.

that was the car.

couldnt get hold of a recovery truck or trailer to pick the car up so a still saw and a high top transit done the job, took 3 hours to completely strip the car to a bare shell, and the about 30min to cut up to put inside the van.

was out in the country in wales, very rough and steep roads, they were like dirt tracks a normal car would of struggled enough dont know how my dad got the van down there, few times he even had to reverve to get the van around some of the corners lol only just wide enough for one car

Blimey you bought that thing! Sounds like quite an adventure to pick her up and quite something to strip her down so quick. Shame you didn't get a log book, you should be able to get one from the DVLA and then you can potentially do a reshell . I think you need the axles, engine and major parts from the car installed in the shell of another to avoid a Q plate. Or are you just transplanting the engine into an existing car and changing the log book on that?

The bearing on the right is fitted to 8V FIRE motors, 1.4, 1.4T and 1.6 SOHC engines, maybe some others.

1.3T has a different tensioner to the one on the left. 1.3T 1.3 and 1.1 mk1 motors have the same tensioner. I assume the one of the left is an original mk1 tensioner (ive never seen one). These were superseeded to the more common type, as found on 1.3T.

I bought a new bearing for a 1.3T from a FIAT agent about a year ago.

@ Gaz – Looks like the Uno could have been saved to me . Ah well, I suppose it could be worse; you could be putting it in a Corsa .

My MK1 is on an F plate, but it’s a resell . Was a D reg (1986 IIR).

Did you save the fibre seats, tailgate, arch and sill protection by any chance . They will be no use to you .

I can’t say for sure if it’s an original tensioner (left). I came by this one when I got my spare head from an e-bay seller. For a fer extra pennies, he threw it in with other essential bits and pieces . I would hope that it’s not the engine’s original tensioner .

Do you have a part number kicking around by any chance? Perhaps it was old stock .

To further clarify, the attached scan highlights the depth difference between our two tensioners.

nope didnt save hardly anything dad was moaning about the parts so i just scrapped the lot just took of little things that i know would sell quickly.
