| T.E.D. | Uno turbo q's Hi, can anyone tell me whcih is better, the mk1 1.3 or the later 1.4? I have reason to believe that the 1.3 is a better engine is this true? Also, do teh 1.4 and 1.3 driveshafts and ECU differ so much as they are not compatible? The reason i ask is that i have chance of a good engined 1.3 uno turbo with good bearbox but no dirveshafts, and a knackered 1.4 tub thats gearbox was on the way out and the engine has seized with the turbo smoking too. The question on the ECU is just a general wonder really too I want to make a good car out of both but dont want to spend too much so any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Jordan

| Fixin UnoTurbo I sleeper | IIR, the early MK1 gearbox has a bottom shift, where the later MK1 box has a top shift. Guess who got the wrong MK1 clutch cable .I can’t comment on the MK1 / 2 compatability. Regards All, Louie Bee.

| Re: Uno turbo q's You have talked about a whole lot of complex subjects with no real specific question or things you want to do. If you ask a specific question I can give you an answer. Otherwise I'll have to write a whole page trying to cover everything ![]() e.g. Is the 1.3 better than the 1.4? What exactly do you mean by "better"? They both have their good and bad points. I did get that you want to fit different drive shafts. This depends which Uno turbo you have exactly. Mk2 are the same as late mk1 but not early mk1 (bottom change).

| T.E.D. | Re: Uno turbo q's I mean engine wise (the 1.3 or the 1.4, which is the better engine?) sorry if i didnt make that clear the 1.3 engine has the gearox link on the top i believe and i was primerily wondering if the 1.4 driveshafts would fit the 1.3 car or are the hubs/gearbox positions that differnt as i do not know much at all about unot tubs. If you could help that would be great thanks. Jordan

1.4 driveshafts and hubs etc will fit a mk1 with a top change gearbox. The only real difference between these and early ones is the length of the shaft.

Rumour has it amongst the turbo boys that the 1.3 is better built (blueprinted), but the 1.4 is pretty much a production line engine. Also, a lot of 1/4 mile racers reckon that the 1.3 is generally a stronger engine as a result. Less failures when compared with the 1.4 engine. But then again, the 1.4 is running more power and a slightly higher boost pressure so that might have something to do with it As far as I'm aware, you could fit the 1.4 gearbox, driveshafts and hubs complete to the 1.3. But ONLY if they both have the top change gearbox. Otherwise you'll have major incompatibility with the gear change linkages. I'm simply rattling off my knowledge here, so don't take any of this as gospel! You need some input from Fro$ty, (Mad Dog!) Dunc, Alex, Louie B. or one of the other turbo boys on here. | Re: Uno turbo q's It depends on what you intend to use the car for, i.e is it a daily driver? fast road car? race car?? etc People say the mark 1 engine 1.3L is better mostly because it has a stronger engine block to begin with whereas the mark 2 block 1.4L has been known to fail at high boost. Thats not to say that the mark 2 engine is rubbish, far from it. If done correctly the mark 2 can also achieve high boost levels and power. Martin from the Turbo Collective site managed to get 230BHP out of the mark 2 engine but that is down to lots of hard work and money being spent and having the car set up properly. I Myself am running about 180BHP at the moment and Dunc is going to be running at least 200BHP (or more knowing him lol) when his uno is done ![]() The mark 2 engine to begin with produces a 118bhp as standard with a top speed of 127mph whereas the mark 1 only manages 105bhp and a top speed of 121mph if i remember correctly.The engines are pretty similar but use different turbos and the boost pressure set up at factory is different on all, the mark 1s run 0.5 bar and the mark 2s run 0.7 bar, punto GTs run 1bar as standard. But as far as engine upgrades are concerned mark 1 parts are scarce and very hard to get hold of whereas parts for the mark 2 which is similar to the punto GT are still available so bear that in mind. | Re: Uno turbo q's 1.3T engine has a better block, thats about it. 1.4T tends to crack in places. 1.3T also has forged rods while 1.4 does not. However, 1.3T is difficult to rebuild as parts such as pistons are not avaiable anymore. 1.3T is a very old engine now. 1.4T shares parts with a punto up to 1999 so is not so bad. The 1.4T has a better cam and the extra capacity dosent hurt. Its also cheaper/easier to get more power out of. Injection system is totally different, 1.4 will support more power but it has a very annoying rev limiter. 1.3 has no limiter. Neither of them have forged cranks At the end of the day anything can be swapped around between a mk1 and mk2 as long as you have the right combo of parts.

So i donthtink i wil need to rebuild it unless i get bored Still wondering on what turbo they have (the 1.3) and what would be a good compromise for road/usability factor if i was to upgrade my car and keep the tub Someone persuade me with a good turbo for the 1.3 and i might keep it Jordan
