MK2 doors on an MK1?

Hullo

In my quest to restore the tub, im on the lookout for a set of doors. question is. will MK2 doors fit straight onto an MK1 or will they need some modification or not fit atall?

as far as the interior trim goes, its not that important, but will the mk1 turbo electric window system fit the MK2 doors? just the motors and that etc. or is it completly different?

Thanks,

main concern is if the doors will fit.

Re: MK2 doors on an MK1?

Mk2 doors will physically bolt up to a mk1 no problem, and vice versa.

The differences come with the window regulator fixings and the door release handle. Mk2 motors will NOT fit a mk1 door without modification. They look almost the same, but the two locating brackets are in different places, plus the electrical connector is slightly different. I know this as I have a set of mk2 motors that won't fit into my mk1 doors!

However, I'm looking into the possibilty of having the brackets removed from the regulators and rewelded in the mk1 positions. Not 100% sure if this will be possible, but when I get the time to do it I will report back.

Of interest, I have just bought two pretty good mk1 drivers doors for my mk1 Uno (no rust on the bottom!). One of the doors has the holes on the inside frame to take both the mk1 AND the mk2 window regulators, plus both door release handles. The other one, like the doors already on my car, only have the mk1 one fixings.

I read somewhere that the last of the mk1's had fixings for both. Maybe the mk2 doors have the same? I have a slightly rusty mk2 door in the back garden but I haven't removed the door trim to check.

This is kind of my dilema, as I have a mk2 turbo interior that I want to fit to my mk1, but that will mean I will have to cut extra holes in the door card to make them fit my mk1 My passenger side door is totally rust free, and is for mk1 fittings only. One of the new drivers doors has more original paint (both the same colour as mine!) than the other, but mk1 fittings only. The other door has had a lower part respray, but has fittings for both. But that doesn't get round the problem of my passenger door being mk1 only...

Anyway, when I've decided which one I'm going to use, the other drivers door will be up for sale for what I paid for it. Thing is, I offered Jai (Turboned) first refusal, so if he doesn't want it you're welcome to buy it off me.

By the way Oldskoolmk1turbo, is it the WHOLE door you can get for £50 new, or is it the outer skin only? £50 for a brand new door is very tempting! Last time I looked up a panel supplier, the lower repair section was £15, and the door skin (not including the upper window frame) was about £45. £50 for a whole new door would be brilliant!

Are you going to the ACE with your new turbo this Thursday Bushboy?

Re: MK2 doors on an MK1?

Hi i got both my doors brand new from a fiat dealer in hounslow called interparts. He can get hold of pretty much anything you need and is a really helpful guy, i'll have a look later and see if i can dig up his number, he charged me about £45 for each door if i remember correctly but probably because i'm really good friends with one of his family members. As for the doors i think mark 2 doors can fit on a mark 1

by the way i got a quick question for you guys (sorry dont mean to hijack ur thread bushboy) do standard unos have different glass to uno turbos as i have a uno turbo electric window motor on my passenger side and this window doesnt wind down fully whereas on the driver side the motor is off an SX model and this side the glass DOES go fully down, its not jammed or anything either. Remember my car was originally a 1litre i.e model so i didnt change the windows to those from an uno turbo just wondering hmmmm

Re: MK2 doors on an MK1?

only different I can think of is that they might be slightly tinted. I belive they are the same shape etc.

could be that the mechanism in one is slightly different from when you converted it.

Im sure someone once told me that the MK1 glass is different tothe MK2 glass even though the doors are structuraly the same, just the bits and bobs inside that are different.

Frosty, you any idea if they can still get brand new MK1 doors? the interior panel is different you see. MK1 door card and arm rests as well as the motors and window mechnism wont fit the MK2 door.

Yes, I did check. Sorry for not getting back earlier, been kind of a bit quiet on the forum lately as I'm up to my eyeballs in college work until mid June.

The mk2 door in my back garden has the fixing holes for both mk1 AND mk2 Uno window regulators and handles. So that means you can fit mk2 doors to a mk1 and swap over the mk1 door handles and regulators.

And yes, I still have the mk2 Uno interior. It WILL go into my Uno when I get the time! Why do you ask?

I have so many bits to fit to my car and no time do it. It's sooooooooo frustrating

As far as I know the door glass and the rear side window glass are exactly the same on a mk1 and mk2. The rear hatch glass is obviously different, and I've been told that the front windscreen is also different between mk1 and mk2. Can't remember who it was, but apparently there are about three different windscreen sizes! No idea for sure though.

Mk1 door card, arm rest, opening handle and window regulator WILL fit a mk2 door You just need to transplant the hardware from one to the other. Check the mk2 door - it should have aperatures for mk1 hardware as well as mk2

A brand spanking new door for £50 sounds very tempting though. Are they still available? Are they the WHOLE door (minus hardware and glass obviously), or just the outer skins? A new door would save so much hassle...

My 1.0 IE (Turbo reshell) has clear glass on the driver's side, and tinted passenger . both windows go all the way down by the motors . However, the passenger side is a lot slower .

If I recall, anything above base will have tinted glass - well the MK1 45S (Bianca) did - Chass? I think Chas's 45S has tinted too .

One thing Frosty mate. The Uno SX was only available in a 3-door model before the launce of the Turbo IE (or thereabouts) .

Regards All,
Louie Bee.

Yup, all mk1 'S' models and up had green tinted glass. My 45S has it Only the base models came with clear glass.

Not sure about mk2's, though I suspect all S, SX and turbo models also had tinted glass. No idea with regards to the special editions though, as many were based on the lower spec models.

Mk1 3 door SX models were available in 3 door form up to about 1985, after which the SX could only be had in 5 door form. Not sure if the SX could also be had before 1985 as a 5 door

Not really an issue, as very early Unos rusted badly! I don't think I've ever seen a 3 door SX on the road, and have only seen one 'A' reg Uno in the last 8 years (see my gallery)! Nothing earlier than 'C' reg (1985/ 1986) seems to have survived

Chas
