the cam belts just snapped in babz 70sx. luckily i was only going about 5-10mph at the time and there were no horrible grinding metal noises etc.

is it likely that just swapping for a new belt will be ok or is there any way i can check for extra damage without taking the engine apart?

what new bits do i need if im to replace the belt?

Put the belt on and turn the engine round by hand. If this is fine make a compression test. If this is fine start the engine.

If any of the valves are bent you will know by then. If it is any more damage it wouldn't matter, because the engine would be in for a rebuilt.
 
just taken as much of the cover off as I can to the belt. it hasnt actually snapped but has just come off :confused: ... obviously this is just as bad as snappage but it obviously wasnt tightened properly in this case :confused:


problem is that actually chaging the belt is an engine out/down job. you pysicaly can even get the cover off fully without taking the engine out/down a bit.

Im beginning to think its not worth it, specialy considering if i take it out, change the belt, put it back in and thn it doesnt start, its a lot of time and effort wasted. plus whilst its out I could fit a 1.6 tipo engine anyway. atleast ide have no doubts of it not working properly.

nightmare (n) babz is looking at getting finance/loan for a sei sporting. if she gets it then the uno is prob being broken. it wont get anything being sold with a non working engine, plus, sx parts in good nick are worth a bit ;)

Chris, DON'T scrap your SX! It's in really tidy condition and it would be a real shame to break it.

Regarding the cambelt, it definitely is not an engine out job to change it. I did one years ago on a mk1 70 SX, but can't remember exactly what we did. The cambelt cover should come off with a bit of fiddling - you may have to remove a few parts at the side of the engine bay but it isn't a difficult job by any means. I'm sure all we had to do was remove the alternator belt.

Changing the cambelt on a Uno FIRE engine (in the car) takes about half an hour. The ohc non FIRE engines shouldn't take any longer. It's really quite a simple job, just make sure the crankshaft and cambelt pulleys are lined up, slip new belt on and re-tension the tensioner bearing.

What might have happend with your engine is that the belt either stripped its teeth, or the tensioner bearing has worked loose allowing the belt to flop around.

If it happend at low speed, then there is a good chance that the engine has survived unscathed. I'm not sure if the non FIRE ohc engine is a 'safe' engine or not, but at such low speeds the chances are you will be fine. Especially if no noise was heard when it happend.

You could also get an engine compression gauge and do a compression test before trying a new cambelt. If the cylinder compressions are fine then the valves are undamaged.

So I would suggest getting a new cambelt and tensioner bearing (about £20), sticking them on with the aid of a Haynes/ Porter manual and seeing what happens. I'm optimistic that you will find the engine runs fine and has suffered no damage.

I know Louie will have me up here for suggesting to keep it on the road as me and Turboned broke up a mk1 SX back in the summer :eek:, but yours is WAY better condition! At least give it a chance to continue living before breaking it!

the tentioner failed mate (n)

but still, i just cant see how i can undo the cover without dropping the engine down.. not necessarily all the way out but defo needs to come down. plus babz has just bought a sei sporting SO noone will be driving the uno anyway. does seem a shame but if someone wants to make me an offer on the whole car then go for it.
 
also, its not in that much of a great condition now, after having to break into it before ace, a few of the panels now have little dents in it (trying various forms of breaking in) and the bootlid lock andparts are buggered.

plus the engine makes a terrible noise when you tow it.. loads of rattling and cluncking.. doesnt sound good...

plus i just dont have the time. all my time off over chrimbo will be spent traveling around for family etc. plus as ive said, its defo an engine down job. there is about a 1cm gap between the cover and the drvers side inner arch.. you just cant get anything down there to undo the last bolt. you cant come up from underneigh neither. ive looked at every possible way. you just cant fit a socket wrench down there, and a spanner wont work as all the bolts are in recesses.

it is a shame.. it was so much fun to drive too. but even if its fixed, it will just be sold on for very little money due to the dents and other bits etc.

im gonna break it in my own time and sell the bits and bobs via ebay rather than letting people tell me what they want.. its too much hastle from my point of view when i have to work 5 days a week.. people will be waiting ages for there bits :p
