HI guys,
Lately my Uno has been squeaking like hell over potholes.Well last night I parked it, put down the handbrake and started rocking the car left to right and squeaked like a pig! It didnt use to do this b4? Do u know what has gone wrong.

We have loadsa potholes here in malta so u can imagine that the car is always squeaking!!

tried WD40 and Duct tape? :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
“All of life’s problems can be solved with two things—duct tape and WD40. If it moves and it shouldn’t, you need duct tape. And if it doesn’t move and it should, you need WD40.”

hehehe I knew I could depend on you guys...but seriously...anyone know what I can do coz its gettin on my nerves. THe squeaking is really loud that i can hear it over the radio!!

upgrade your sound system!

sorry i really dont know what it is, my rear suspension is knocking but i cant be arsed to have it fixed, waiting on my coilovers so hopfully it will hold out till then.

Hmmm, difficult to say without seeing the car to try and locate the squeaking source.

Is it a squeaking noise or a creaking noise? My Uno made a heck of a racket from the front right hand side, was creaking like mad. Put it in for the MOT over a year ago, but they passed it and found nothing wrong with the suspension. I looked myself and could find nothing amiss.

To make matters even more strange, it did this for a year then suddenly went away    !!!!!!!!!

I suspect it's a rubber bush on the suspension arm, or maybe a rusty spring creaking in its guide. Or if from the front maybe it's the top mounting bush?

Try spraying the bushes with WD40 and see if that helps. Other than that you'll have to take the suspension apart, or do as Bulldog said and upgrade your sound system! It's amazing how a decent stereo can solve all manner of creaks and rattles :D

This is a long shot, but it could be warn brake pads (the metal bracket rubbing on the disk).
Or, possibly more likely, the tin backing thing on the brakes could be rubbing on the disk (thats what made a squeaking noise on my punto). If it is just bend it away from the disk.

These are long shots but they are easy and worthwhile to check.

Well thanks guys I will give the WD40 a go. THe noise is coming from the back and its more of a creaking noise as 1986UnoS specified. I will check brakes as well as althoug it is a long shot, knowing my luck it could be them. Will keep u update after I tackle them in the weekend!
Thanks

Well as I told you the noise was emanating from the back. What bothers me is that it only does the noise with the handbrake in the down position. It doesnt do it when the handbrake is up!

As regards the sound system...I think I good one that is good enough and has more than enough power for my needs. Im not saying that its the best but it is enough.

Before digging into the rear brake, try applying the infamous WD40 on the handbrake cable wherever possible.
If it does not help, remove the drum and apply the thing on the levers operating the brake jaws - there is a tricky joint in the handbrake lever that often needs hammering. Once you remove the drum, you will know what I mean. Apply copper or water-resistant grease onto/into the joint.
Check the spring clips that attach the brake jaws to the shield (U-clips visible after removing the brake drum). When worn, they are doing "dong-dong-dong" while cornering :)
If they are OK (tensioned and well lubricated), check the thickness of the brake jaw friction material.
If the thickness is OK (more than 2 mm), get rid of the brake pistons including pipes. The pistons are funny cheap (10 Euro a pair) and generally not worth repairing/resealing (as they will have the bleed screws rust-welded anyway).
Been there, done that :D
Huh?
If I forgot something regarding rear brakes, pls let me know...

Now I know what I forgot  !
Check the inner diameter of the drum! The limit value should be stamped/cast on its inner side (186,8 mm or similar, if memory serves).
When the drum is worn beyond the value, the shoes can get stuck and stop removing into non-braking position. This not only makes noise, but also overheats the brake.
Funny thing is that a pair of (cheapest I could get, Danish manufacturer NK) new drums is about twice the price of brake discs (Brembo... do you dig the F1/Ferrari feeling :D ?) for the front axle  .

Update:

I will check the brakes but I noticed something strange. TOday I drove in the rain and the noise completely stopped. Does this help in narrowing down the problem??

Thanks

Obviously water is lubricating something so get that can of wd40 out again and start spraying
Rain in Malta??
We have ice here at the moment.
Pete

Well after driving through loadsa water in the rain, the squeaky squeaky squeaky went:) so Im not bothered with opening or fixing anything!:D

Thanks for all your help though guys....Im sure this thread will be of help to others in the future.
