So my dear Uno 2000 1.1 just blew the head gasket.

2 cylinders gone. There were no signs. Smelled a burnt rubber smell yesterday thought what the heck today drove suddenly weird noise, smoke and wham nothing.

I am at a loss. Got 148 000km on, which for 16 years isn't that much it seems that everything is just going on a monthly basis now.

My thoughts.. burnt rubber, cambelt struggling to turn waterpump - low flow of coolant, overheating - blows HG

how have you diagnose the lost 2 x cylinders..??

Hi charlie

Ive just done my head gasket on my '99 1.1 it was also running on 2 cylinders , when i removed the cylinder head i saw that it blew between 2 cylinders hence the symptoms it gave , i had a failed thermostat , ive had 15+ unos and this is not the first time ive seen a gasket blowing between 2 cylinders

With regard to the water pump the only way it would stop the cambelt is if it seized completely and before it seized it would make quite a big grinding noise

Remember depending on how much the car overheated you would probably need to replace and check your piston rings ( if the cylinder head comes off the pistons arent far from being taken out)

Goodluck !

Hope this helps

Ok, so my head gasket was replaed. Drove Friday, fine, Saturday fine, Sunday fine. Monday I think fine.

Tuesday I notice coolant puddle beneath the radiator on the left side. I felt beneath the radiator there was a wet spot. I topped it up. Yesterday very warm on a 10 minute drive, stopped at home coolant is literally boiling.

Car cooled down, I restarted takes about 15 minutes heats up like crazy and then the coolant starts boiling in the bottle spilling over.

Do you guys think it's the radiator. It seems a bit old and worn looking or my head gasket that is till faulty.

Water pump is fine, cannot see oil in the coolant either My mechanic without looking said buy a new radiator but what the fudge I am irritated.

I can buy a new one and put it in myself - not so hard looking at it but I don't want to throw away money if it may be something else. Don't know about the thermostat?

. :bang:

After a headgasket is done it cant go faulty

There are one of few things to check when your car overheats ,

Thermostat - if its failed in the closed position will cause water not to flow, a quick way of checking it is to feel the Botom and top radiator hoses when the car is hot/overheating they should be the same temperature if its not the same temperature then thermostat will need to be replaced

Waterpump- if your waterpump if worn out and not circulating water fast enough it could cause overheating

Radiator - if your radiator is blocked water wont flow through not giving it a chance to cool

RadiatorFan/Fan switch - if this fails the radiator fan will not operate at all , a quick way to check it is to bridge the two wires coming to the switch ,if your fan comes on then you know your fan itself is working, if your heat gauge is at half and you dont hear your fan then you may need to replace the switch (assuming the fan itself works after you have tested it)

Check the above and im sure you will find the fault

Goodluck !
