Technical All nostalgic - Arrival of my 1996 Uno Start

Just replaced the existing Seicento box (Synchro was shot) that I had installed in my Uno with a donor I got from an MK2 Punto. After removing the additional bits I didn't need the box mated nicely to the 1.2 block. After installing the driveshafts I noticed play inside the cups. I also discovered the existing cv boots wouldn't fit. I've since discovered the cups are larger on the Punto that they are on the Seicento.

Hopefully I'll be able to swap them around easily enough.

So as I've mentioned before I've only ever had the Nissan built Fiat Uno's from South Africa. I noticed a few "differences" for instance:

Not that I smoke but no cigarette lighter?
IMG_20151224_120507055.jpg
Only 2 fan settings? The SA models had 3.

Fixed rear windows? All the models I had could be opened.

No trip meter?

I've been so busy with the mechanics that I haven't even had a chance to look inside the cabin yet.

Nice little project, I think its just the starts, that don't have opening windows, cigertte lighter or roof racks that last of the uno hobbies had to keep costs down but all the holes are there for windows

Cups have now been swapped across. Everything now sits and fits right.

Thought I'd include a pic just incase it might be useful to someone else. The Fiat Uno / Seicento cup measures around 62/63mm whereas the Punto cup is around 67/68mm. Not a huge difference but it was enough to cause the spider joint to move around inside the cup. It also meant the Uno boot wouldn't fit.

Getting really annoyed now. This is the third time I'm replacing the gearbox and it still isn't right. Although the replacement gearbox selects gears 1-5 without any problems all gears have a whirring sound that gets louder the harder I accelerate. I'm not sure whether it is the diff or the input bearing. The noise is present only while the gears are engaged. There is no noise when the car is free rolling in neutral.

Those who have been through a similar experience will appreciate the frustration I am feeling about now. Replacing a gearbox is a dirty and time consuming job. It is very annoying having to do this three times because the boxes I have been supplied are faulty. :bang:

Just bought this as a donor:

Clutch is badly worn and I got the car for a bargain. My plan is to pull every near compatible part off the Punto and install them into the Uno giving it a much needed refresh. I'll also have all the parts I need to finally complete my engine upgrade.

Rest assured the next update will be a big one :D

Don't be like that :)

She was headed for the scrapyard. At least this way her end has some purpose and her parts are going to a good cause.

She will be treated with respect all through the process, promise :D

The two cousins parked up waiting to see what plans I have for them.

Box is out for the 4th time. Picked new box up today will fit in the morning. Hopefully the box is good and I'll be able to turn my attention to the rest of the car now.

Managed to swap diff over from original busted Uno gearbox. The internals are slightly smaller but it fits and the box is back in.

Test drive tomorrow.

Took car for a 40 mile drive and it seems fine. A bit early to tell obviously I'll punish it a little tomorrow and see how everything holds up. I think I might finally be able to move on to the rest of the car now ;)

So it has been awhile since I posted an update. The replacement gearbox seems to be working properly. I am happy to report the car is in daily use. I couldn't sleep last night and eventually gave up around 4am so I took her for a drive. It was cold and raining heavily but the car performed well so did the heater and the windscreen wipers :slayer:

As you can see she is still very much standard (aside from the Punto 60 block). Next week I'm hoping to find the time to finish the P60 upgrade.

Result! That's a fine looking Uno and, having read this thread, I doff my cap to your mechanic skills!
