Hi guys,

I wanted to use synthetic engine oil in my uno 1.7D which I bought recently. The engine has done 1,50,310 kms.I was looking at Mobil delvac 1 but it's a 5w 40 oil and my mechanic said I need a 15w 40 oil.

I live in India so would 5w 40 oil work fine here?

Will synthetic oil and that too 5w 40 be fine in the uno 1.7d engine?

Any other oil recommendations?
I had a look at castrol magnatec as well.

Why doesnt anyone reply to my posts? Is it because I'm a new member?

LOL I think that you should only use that oil, as long as your engine is in good condition....

What oil?I mentioned I just bought the car. This is my first car and I want to take care of the engine because it's old so I need recommendations.

5w40 is very thin oil, which is (at least at the garage where i work) only used for engines that have a filter in the exhaust. Because of the age of the engine, I would use a thicker oil, maybe with sludge protection. As the margins on the engine have of course increased, because of the age, a thicker oil might be a good idea.

Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5W40, perfect oil for your car.

The 5 is the viscosity when the oil is cold and the 40 is the viscosity when the oil is hot. Personally I would use a quality 10w40 semi synthetic oil in it. Valvoline or Fuchs are good quality oils.

Synthetic oil is not required for Uno 1.7D considering the age of the vehicle. Use Shell HX5 Diesel 15W40 or Mobil Delvac MX 15W40 or Castrol GTX Diesel 15W40.

If the previous owners have not done engine flush, It is better to do an engine flush using OWS 210, change engine gaskets if possible and fill with good mineral oil.

Mine have clocked 120000+ and going strong. I've flushed, cleaned the injectors and been using Shell. There is noticeable reduction in noise, vibration and increase in pickup.

Thankyou for your reply eby.How much does the ows 210 flush liquid and the oils that you recommended cost? I wouldn't want to fiddle with the gaskets right now cause there aren't any leaks and the engine bay is pretty clean.I've been running it on biodiesel that I make myself and the engine vibrations have considerably reduced and it sounds really smooth.

Sounds like a nice car! Like the others have said the 5w or 10w is for cold weather. I'm guessing in India you don't have a lot of that. Any brand name Fuchs castrol Mobil shell 5w 40 10w 40 is going to serve you well. At the age of your car just change it more often. 8000kms and don't worry so much for the exact brand you can get there.

OWS and Shell HX5 5L will coast about Rs.800/- & Rs.1600/- respectively.

Clean engine bay doesn't always mean no gasket leaks. Usually the sludge/grime inside the engine act as a barrier and seals gasket holes.

Flush the engine only if,

  • never been flushed or flushed recently,
  • open the OIL cap and check if you don't see a clean nut / cam shaft on the leftside.
  • sluggish pickup / too much black exhaust,
  • and you are planning to replace engine gaskets, especially sump gasket.

Flush removes the dirt and grime inside the engine, including the grime that prevented any gasket leaks.

Professor, can you tell us how to make biodiesel @ home ?.

Northern parts of India have cold weather. But most old vehicles don't use synthetics as the cost is thrice compared to mineral/semi synthetic oil.

The service interval for 1.7Diesel is 7500kms as per Fiat manual and that too with mineral oil. I assume synthetic oil should last almost twice, not 8000kms.

Hi folks,

  1. I wanted to follow-up on a similar query and get suggestions on which of the following would be best for a 1999 Uno 1.7D which has a very decent engine condition but has been sitting idle for 4-5 years (pre-COVID lockdown).
Use case: It is to be operated as per temperatures of Eastern India (temperatures: dip to a minimum of 5~10°C during winters AND peaks at 37-42°C maximum during summers). Mostly will be run on a flat terrain and very occasionally to be driven past through some hills (moderate-steep climbs).
<https://www.99rpm.com/fiat/oils-fluids/engine-oil.html> Will the Petronas 15W40 mineral oil work fine or should I consider 5W40 (semi/fully)-synthetic oils?
Also since the engine hasn't been started for quite some time- would you suggest getting the engine flushed before replacing the oil and changing its filter? Hasn't been flushed since 2013, not sure if the previous owner ever did.
2. Further, is this <https://www.99rpm.com/fiat/tutela-technyx-75w-85-1l.html> a compatible/decent enough transmission oil for it or would you suggest some other? This is my first car and unfortunately I do not have the Owner/Service manual for 1.7D and couldn't find much information other ways.

Do not use an engine oil system flush.

Do use the oil viscosity recommended by fiat.
Do replace the oil and filter after you first 500miles if you think the oil changes were previously neglected
Then revert to fiat normal oil /filter change intervals

Okay. I don't have a fiat manual for the model nor could find it from anywhere on internet. But I think I will go with 15W40 for now..

If you read the info very kindly provided by another member on one of your other threads(asking for a manual) you will see the correct type is 15w40.

Thanks for pointing that out! Weird that email notifications didn't pop up for the replies to that thread. I can see them now. So glad to have found the manual for reference.
