cost of Uno windscreen from a scrappie

Need to replace the windscreen - What's the going rate for one at a UK scrappie these days?

First time in years that I'm not fully comp and the windscreen dies!

Am I right in thinking there's no difference between Mk1 & 2 windscreens?

Re: cost of Uno windscreen from a scrappie

i wouldn't bet the farm on that asumption...fiat made many revisions to the basic mk1 over its' life, and they are sure to have made a few on the change to the mk2. when mine got done, autoglass milton keynes had to order one in special because they said from the chassis number the one they had wouldn't fit quite right..bull or real, i have no idea..

Re: cost of Uno windscreen from a scrappie

Hi there,

I think the screens might be the same but on the mk1 there was 2 different window rubbers.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Trevor.

Re: cost of Uno windscreen from a scrappie

Mk1 and Logo windshields are compatible (I have already put aftermarket Logo windshield to my Mk1). However, it seems that the Logo windshield is smaller as the original Mk1 rubber seal sticks finely to the new glass, less finely to the body.
Although there were no signs of water leaking around, I used transparent bathroom silicone between the rubber seal and the body just to be on the safe side.
The aftermarket windshield I have purchased is clear, manufactured by NordGlass (which, I believe, is a Polish company supplying Poland-based Fiat plants directly) and it was some 50 Euro.

I can answer this one for you Pete.

Yes, it is easy to change the screen. Lubricate round the rubber seal (WD40, silicone grease etc.), and pull it away from the edge of the windscreen aperature to break the seal from inside the car. Now gently but firmly using a constant pressure, push the windscreen out starting at one corner. Try and use a flat, soft surface like the soles of trainers to push and spread the load. You should find the windscreen will start to push out along with its seal. Work along the edge until the screen and seal is almost out at the top edge, then you should be able to pull it away from outside of the car.

Never push from the centre of the screen as you'll almost certainly crack it!

Refitting, you get a piece of strong cord that will wrap round the whole of the windscreen seal sitting in the channel. Using rubber grease or silicone lubricant again, smear some in the rubber seal. Now place the screen with seal into the windscreen aperature, but try and get the seal to sit along the lower flange.

With an assistant applying gentle pressure from the outside, pull the cord at a right angle to the screen from within the car. The rubber seal should pull over the windscreen aperature flange as you pull it along the edges of the screen.

You might need to fettle the screen from the outside as you fit it, to make sure it locates properly. But other than that it is a fairly simple job, though do bear in mind there is always a risk that a screen can crack when fitting.

The last thing I would add is that there is more chance of cracking if the weather/ glass is cold, and also the rubber is much more pliable when warm. Right now is not a good time to change a windscreen as the weather is too cold! If you have to change the screen now, then try and do it in a heated garage after leaving the car in it for a few hours to warm up.

Best of luck!

Chas

Re: cost of Uno windscreen from a scrappie

Thanks Chas
I will take your advice and wait until it is warmer.
I take it there no need to use any mastic to seal the screen.
Thanks for your v helpful description.

Hi

I've got a late Mk1 with cracked screen - and I've got a coup[le of questions you guys will probably know the answer to...

Am I right that the late mk1 (G reg) has the same screen as a mk1 ?

Does the dashboard have to come out to change the screen ?

BTW are there many FIAT UNO selecta around ?

Cheers
Jezza

Re: cost of Uno windscreen from a scrappie

i've had my uno turbo's screen changed twice, neither time needed the dash out, but was a pain(!) for autoglass to source the screen for the second one, had to come from their MK depot

do the headlights on your car look like the uno in my sig? if so you have a mk1
if they look like duncs, you're in trouble he'll come round with a chainsaw coz no one is allowed to copy him.....

Re: cost of Uno windscreen from a scrappie

Chas wrote an excellent guide (as usual).
I like to loosen the top of the dashboard to give more room to get the rubber seal and the cord over the flange. You do this by removing the centre screw (in between the demister vents) and then by prying up the corners (this is a lot easier once you have removed the broken windscreen!) There should be enough 'give' in the dashboard to pull the top edge out about 7-10mm which is enough to make all the difference.

Incidentally, removing a broken windscreen is IMHO best accomplished by slouching in the seat and pushing the glass out with your feet... quick and easy. Of course it will probably crack further but this doesn't matter...

As far as I'm aware, there is no difference between Mk1 and Mk2 windscreens - except that certain Uno versions (Turbo, SX?) have tinted windscreens and other versions don't. Some Mk1 Turbos have bronze-tinted glass, others green-tinted. Easy to check with a piece of white paper. I actually wonder whether the difficulty in sourcing a tinted windscreen may have caused the holdup with Autoglass MK for turboned?

£10 for a windscreen at a wreckers is a bargain. We pay more like £40 used, £70 new.

(CZ)enda... is the 'Logo' you mentioned a Honda Logo? A much newer car that I have seen on the roads here... I think they were introduced in 1999?

Thanks,
-Alex
