Quarter Mile

Goin to the quarter mile track this weekend to race against my friend who has a standard 1.0 year 2000 polo. It only has a sports exhaust. Standard it puts out 50bhp. Im gonna race him with my Uno FIRE 45. What you think?

Who do you think will win?? He has more power yes but he is also a whole lot heavier. His car weighs around 900kg as opposed to the 740kg of the uno.

Re: Quarter Mile

it will all go down to your driving skill when ur both fairly evenly matched. but i cant imagine traction is a prob in a 1.0 uno or polo

my money would be on the uno tho

Re: Quarter Mile

go for it but also note that apparently FIRE engines have 15% more power than a normal engine- that is quoted from a fiat brochure so it should be true

Re: Quarter Mile

how can I film it!!I dont want to get someone else in the car with me to ride with coz that would increase weight and that is a definite no-no. I dont have a video camera just a normal digital camera but it has a video function. Anyone have any ideas how I can mount the camera somewhere to the car??

Thanks

The FIRE engines have 15% more TORQUE than a normal engine, not power! 45hp is nothing for a 1.0, the original Mini was pushing out similar power from the same capacity nearly 40 years ago.

However, it is torque that is good for acceleration and driveability. A fact lost on those who think that horsepower is everything.

I can't remember where it came from, one of the big manufacturers I think, but there was this quote:

"Horsepower sells, but torque wins races".

So there is a good possibility that if the Uno is driven right it should beat the Polo

Don't forget that for maximum acceleration it is better to change up a gear earlier than to red line the engine. This is because the FIRE engine produces max torque around 2800 rpm. When you change up a gear this is where you want the revs to drop down to so as to give maximum torque in all gears. I find that changing up around 4 - 4500 rpm drops the revs into this rev range.

Good luck with the 1/4 mile, and show that Polo what a Fiat can do
