Leaded or unleaded?

I have just bought, don't laugh.
An Uno CVT Selecta 1116cc. 1989 (F) 47,200 miles one owner.
Apart from a few scabs on the bottom of the doors, it is really a sound car and ideal as a runabout for my youngest.
The question I have is, does it use the old four star leaded fuel, or unleaded.
Your help appreciated.

Welcome to the board Freemansmith!

According to Mr. Haynes (worshop manuals), you can use unleaded (minimum 95 RON) in the following models with the indicated serial numbers:

903cc - 146A.000, 146A.046
999cc - 156A2.000
1116cc - 138B.000, 138B.046, 146A4.000, 146A4.048
1299/1301cc - 138B2.000, 138B2.046, 149A7.000, 1149A7.000

I think the serial number is stamped on the chassis plate, under the bonnet. It might also make up part of the engine number, though I can't remember off hand.

A good rule of thumb as to whether an engine can run unleaded fuel or not is if it has an aluminium head. If the head is aluminium, then valve inserts have to be used as alloy is too soft to have valves working directly on the them. Most cars with alloy heads have hardened valve inserts/ seats, so in theory can run unleaded.

Only thing to watch out for when switching to unleaded is to see if the engine 'pinks' or 'knocks' (predetonates) under hard acceleration. If it does then the timing will have to be adjusted to stop it, as pinking can cause damage to the engine.

Good luck with your new Uno, and if you have any other questions please feel free to ask away. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on here who will be happy to offer advice.

Chas

Re: Leaded or unleaded?

I only have the one picture, until I get chance to do the scabs on the bottom of the doors I have raised the underseal of the sills to include an inch of the doors.

Re: Leaded or unleaded?

That looks Mint!

I did the same on my first Uno to hide poor rust work.

Wow, that is one VERY clean mk1! Same colour as mine too :-)

The door bottoms rusting is a weak point on the Uno. Normally when rust shows on the outside, it means the door has rusted from the inside out. Not good! To help prevent rusting, take off the door panel and inject rustproofing wax all over the inside, taking special care to get it in where the door skin meets the door frame and all along the bottom of the door frame itself.

That should hold the rust at bay for a while.

Anyway, good luck with your Uno and enjoy the forum.

Chas
