Hi, am looking at a hose on e bay (hot air intake pipe) for my sons Uno 45 1989 reg,log book says 999cc,how do I tell whether it is a "Fire engine type?" cheers Tartdog.

I had an F reg 903cc (pushrod) Uno. Not sure if it was 88 or 89, but the early MK2 also had the 903cc option. Upto the the Cat converter, when it became the 899cc, but droped for the Uno :)
Didn't realise it was an option. Thought the pushrod appeared in special editions and you just got it or didn't therefore.

Yours is still a FIRE though Tartdog!

I had the pushrod engine in 2 Unos. both unos were badged "Formula", but there was nothing special about them (at the time), just the base model and I don't think you could get an uno with less options if you tried :)

I've seen a couple of MK2s also badged Formula on scrap yards (a few years ago now) and no prize for guessing which engine they carried...

The FIRE was reserved for the posh uno 45 :woot:

Ditto in NZ too, a number of Mk1 Uno 45 models arrived in 1989 with the 903cc pushrod motor - most seem to have been either badged 45-S (plush seats and carpet, 5-spd with 'short' 5th) or had 'Sting' decals (ordinary trim, 4-spd)

The plain-jane Mk1 45 in beige, blue, white, or red, with no headrests, no rear wiper, and 4-spd had been fitted with the 999cc FIRE since 1986! So for NZ it was the 'specials' that got the noisier, less-torquey engine with the old points ignition to go with your fancy seats, metallic paint, pinstripe, and sunroof - pretty funny really...

I have seen a Mk2 1991 45 3-dr once in NZ, which also had the 903cc engine - bizarre. Mk2 was slow to arrive in NZ and was outsold by used Jap imports, which cranked up about that time. I guess for the price of a new 1991 Uno you could have a 1988 Nissan Maxima with all the bells and whistles.

Anyway this is mere trivia ;)
Lewey and Louie are right, a 999cc is always a FIRE.

For those NZ folk who want to know.
Mk 1 Unos came to NZ as 70SL (1301cc SOHC), 60S (1116cc SOHC), 60 (1116cc SOHC 4 speed), 45S (999cc FIRE with 5 speed), 45 (999cc with 4 speed) and 45 Sting (903cc pushrod) and the Turbo.
All 70SL and 60S were 5 door although a small no of 70SX 3 doors did arrive. The 45 was a poverty pack model in both 3 and 5 door and the 60 was als a poverty pack but only in 5 door. The 45S was available in both 3 and 5 door. The 45 Stings were diverted from the English market, hense the MPH speedo, to fill a need because the factory could not supply the FIRE engined 45 in sufficient quantities. Some of you may remember the red 45 Stings around Auckland with the big yellow phone on their roofs delivering "Dial a Dino's" pizzas.

As far as I know all UK spec Uno`s always had front headrests, the last UK spec Fiat to recieve headrests was the 126 in 1990, as far as I can tell, this was the year headrests became compulsory in the UK. Not sure if early Panda`s had them.

As far as I can tell, passenger side mirrors became compulsory in 1988.

I always avoided Formula`s because of the 903 lump, although they have the bonus of being able to recieve the Turbo engine marginly easier than converting a FIRE.

How come the 903 is marginly easier to convert? Captive nuts for the right engine mount

I did say it was marginal Louie! :D

Many Pandas were without headrests before the 1991 re-modelling with 750 models notably retaining the old-school hammock seats until they were dropped in 1991.

I`ve had a number of Panda`s going back to 87`, including my current 89` 750, & they`ve all had headrests Lewey, I`m not saying they all did, but I`ve yet to see one without. Even the Series ones with hammock seats had quilted headrests in the UK, then they all went to the plastic ones with the series 2`s. I may be wrong though.

It does depend what market its for too, Ucovs Dads left hooker Uno has rear headrests, I think he said it was from eastern Europe.

Yeah, I think you're right, I was thinking of the big plastic headrests actually.
