Speedo Problem

Dear all,
My speedo died the other day (went to 0 & stayed there), so I got a new cable & changed it out, but the damn thing still doesn't work. Anyone got any ideas?

Re: Speedo Problem

Can be difficult to get cable re-attached, so just pull out cluster and try again. Happened to me after removing cluster.

Have you got the cable that you took out? Any apparent problems? Maybe it came off the gearbox end?

Perhaps take out cluster and drive down road to see if cable is turning. If not turning, reattach to gearbox end, if still no joy perhaps drivegear in transmission broken (I think you can unbolt it).

If cable is turning... haven't seen a failed speedo before, they are very reliable. You'll just have to try a substitute cluster from a wrecker's, and if that works it is possible to swap the bits into your cluster.

Good luck,
-Alex

No, the cable ain't turning! I'll have to get a mechanic on the case, but i'll let you know what the problem was to aid the rest of the poor buggers hanging around on this site!

Re: Speedo Problem

Hmm, I ripped apart my dial unit today and fiddled with the speedo cable fixing. It seems to have fixed my problem ('sticky' speedo), but why was it all greasy/oiling?

Re: Speedo Problem

ts86, Grease/oil works its way up the cable as it turns, there should be some sort of washer on the cable to prevent it getting into the speedo itself. I just take the cable out (leaving the outer part connected to the gearbox) and wipe it with a paper towel, also spray some CRC/WD40 on it to clean it.

Then smear some lithium grease on the cable, and put it back in. The fitting can be tricky to get back onto the speedo properly, you have to hold the collar back and push hard on the cable until it clips on, then slide the collar on to lock it.

Sticky Speedo (1.0 IE) (Now Merged from New thread)

Hi All.

Today I noticed my speedometer is sticking. If I accelerate slowly it stays were it is. – Same for light braking. – I’m sure I wasn’t doing 40 while parked up at the lights lol. It works OK under heavy conditions, :)nono: or if I whack the dash).

 What do you reckon cable or clock?

I’ve only got 78K on clock. Could it have something to do with the extra “Choppiness” caused by lowering 35MM? Could have shaken something out of place?

Kind Regards,

I used to have this, and in fact still do sometimes. Whacking the dash, just like you do, always fixes it.

Do a search on the archives for all the replies I got.

What I did was pull the dial cluster out to the front, fiddled the speedo cable and that was that.

Alex advised to do it properly by pulling it off the actual meter, cleaning it and then re-fitting with lithium based grease. It's probably the best way of doing it, but for me it now only seems to stick after about 85mph (on the clock) ;)

I think it's just one of those things that goes like that - I believe the cable link from the gearbox is mechanical.

 Silly me!

I'm after SX type clocks with Rev counter really. I might as well hang on till I have new clocks and go from there LOL. Hope the dashboard survives till then LOL.

 Penny drops? I might try wiggling the cables in the engine bay till then. I might of upset something when replacing the Distributor, spark plugs and air filter the other week - LOL

:woot:I guess I'd better merge to DannyL's thread - Here Goes...

Regards All,
