Your old Alternator

Nearly 3 years on I fitted that Alternator .

This morning when I got to work I realised my Alt was dead.. The battery warning light occasionally lit dully when Idoling, then with ignition on without engine running no battery light

Managed to make it home (20 miles) with minimal electric use. Think I had no lights as I pulled onto the drive .

After an hour or so my red Uno was back on her feet having made enough charge to start the car .

The old Uno only managed 105k .

Anyways cheers again Sam if your ever on here again

All the best for your Unos this year lads n ladies.

Re: still got plenty of bits lads.

Now it’s dead after 11 months

Driving home tonight and suddenly I had a feeling that the instrument panel was a bit dim. Straight away I suspected Alternator .

Again with minimal electric usage I made it home.

I think the battery light stays lit with engine running if you loose the belt. Sure enough the belt was in place. I went to start the car and found the battery light did not light.

After turning the car over for a split second, the light lit and remained lit till the car started. Once running the light ever so dimly lights. This can be re created – sometimes the light will light, sometimes not.

Anyone have any ideas on the matter? Got a spare?

Re: still got plenty of bits lads.

It is possible that signal wire to alternator is broken. Other possibility is that you have worn alternator brushes.

Re: still got plenty of bits lads.

I did wiggle the low tension wire but made no difference, so nothing to loose..

Had the brushes off the original alternator and one had snapped. It probably wore so small that it gave up.

Took the one I fitted in January to bits too and found the brushes near the end of their life too, but the right shape at the end.

Put these brushes into the other alternator body. Once back on the car hay presto the battery light came one and once started, the Speedo could be seen again.

I’m sure it won’t last long but at least I don’t have to drive the Turbo Seicento in the slippy conditions yesterday.

Will be on the lookout for a brush kit.
