My old LGDUno had a annoying problem, that I didn't know existed until I got my UCFUno.

The gearstick is all floppy, whereas the new car has an excellent gearstick which is springy and when in gear, doesn't wobble from side to side.

What's causing this and how can it be fixed? :D

Is it the gear change rods, or are there springs or pistons of some sorts?

This is a good example of something that I need make into a FAQ - frequently asked question - since I'm sure we've covered this before but I don't have time to do a search right now

Your newer Uno (1994) may have a different design of gearlever (does the knob push down to select reverse?) - or perhaps both have that design?

Anyway, on the gearlever most commonly-fitted to Unos, there is a pivot about halfway down the lever that rests in a U-shaped bracket. Usually, an extra washer or two at this pivot point will tighten things up a bit and make it acceptable.

To do the job properly, a bush kit is available from your specialist/dealer (it's not a genuine FIAT part, just a selection of bushes that fit). The replacement bushes for the gearlever pivot look like two 'top hats' - they replace the sleeve-and-washers design that you might find there.

If you have the newer design of gearlever then I don't know what causes difficulties with that one - you'll have to remove the gaiter and wiggle the lever around, and look for where the slackness is. Sorry about that!

Thanks for the tips, want to start thinking about this FAQ together? There's a few things I could add.

I do indeed have the newer "push down for reverse" style.

I've tried taking the cover off, but can't see anything that could be causing it.
