Problems with gearbox Fiat Uno Mk 1

Hi guys,

I'm having problems with my 4-speed gearbox. Its hard to get in 3rd and sometimes i have problems with 1st and revers too. But mainly with 3rd gear.
I have checked the gearchange rods below the car and they are a bit slugish. Could it be the problem or is there another reason?

Have you checked that the clutch is adjusted correctly?

Re: Problems with gearbox Fiat Uno Mk 1

dont think its the clutch first and reverse would be a dog to get in if it wasnt clearing fully ,have you changed oil in gearbox or even oil level ??

Re: Problems with gearbox Fiat Uno Mk 1

As above, plus lubricate the pivot shaft (if there is one, not sure on the 4 spd) just behind the gearbox as they can seize up.

Also if theres any oil leaks, even from the distributor above the gearbox, it can cause clutch, & therefore gearchange issues.

Re: Problems with gearbox Fiat Uno Mk 1

Plus over time the synchro rings tend to wear out on 3rd gear before the other gears

Because drivers tend to change down too early and/or too quickly from top into 3rd

Not necessarily. A slightly mal-adjusted clutch may sometimes only manifest itself in one or two gears. Don't forget as well that the op said the last owner changed the clutch disc (clutch assembly I assume), which would require gearbox removal and completely removing the clutch cable. It's possible that the clutch only needs adjusting after the clutch cable was refitted and not quite adjusted correctly, which seeing as that costs nothing and only takes a few minutes should be the first thing to try (assuming you have a couple of 10mm spanners and a Haynes manual). Start with the cheapest and easiest options first, as well as the most obvious.

Also the drive boots shouldn't leak at all if in good condition. They only leak if they are old and need replacing!

Re: Problems with gearbox Fiat Uno Mk 1

Hi again

Seems that this gearbox problem has solved itself, gears are fine now. Just changed the engine oil and going to change gearbox oil too. So i'll see if it makes the gears smoother. So i'll update the thread wen i have the results.

Re: Problems with gearbox Fiat Uno Mk 1

You should find that the drain plug is magnetised
SO it will usually have some tiny bits of metal on it
My oil was full of glitter because the wrong oil had been put in previously and the 3rd synchro has pretty much totally gone
