Dude! What's wrong with your car?

As the title says, whats wrong with your car? I mean, the one you use regularly, not one that is just a shell that you are transplanting bits between.

Mine:
Outside window rubbery things need replaceing as they have shrunk and water gets in causing...

Rust. Thankfully only little bits on the bottom side of the door, but i still dont like them being there. Everywhere else is fine thankfully.

Distributor oil leak

Handbrake needs tightening.

My speedo is useless. It says Im doing anywhere betwen 20 and 110 miles an hour. Sometimes it's between -60 and 80!

Edit - wide but barely noticeable dent in the passenger door.

Other than that, I think it is all fine!

So, whats wrong with yours?

Re: Dude! What's wrong with your car?

5 door :P, totally rust free (major bits) a little rust on sill join under the rubber and it has scratches on passenger door in the middle and a small dent on the wing but was there before i got the car.

apart from that the only thing that's wrong is that i have only painted the drivers side breaks lol, may do the other side today haha.

Also when i changed my camshaft for the punto 75 866 camshaft my old one had 4x4 stamped in it. I know this car was standard as my nan bought it from new and she wouldn't know anything about engine and wouldn't get one fitted from a panda 4x4 so did they start putting them in later on? mines k reg.

Handbrake comes up about 17 clicks, or is in not holding.

If 17 clicks it’s cable adjustment, it about 4-8 and not holding, it’s more likely to be the soft steal leavers that the cables attach to at the drum end are seizing (common Uno and Cento fault). These beasts.

As for the Speedo, you recon it’s cable or gauge? I’m breaking my MK2 so should have the cable, or if gauge I have an SX set going which have the rev counter and correctly reading Speedo for standard uno wheels.

Doors always trap water in the bottom as the drain hols are NOT at the lowest point they need modding to work efectivly.

Re: Dude! What's wrong with your car?

Cheers Louis, I might take you up on that offer.

The speedo I now firmly wedged pointing down at the floor It must have taken a knock in the car. Need to have a look at it this evening. I think that the problem is in the connection point. I can see the cable turning, so as said, I think it is the connection. Is it just supposed to be a clean and dry connection (no gunk or anything) sitting between the needle and the connector piece, or should i put a little bit of grease in to cause some friction?

(ALEXGS!!!) - Also, this weekend, I took the heater water valve off of my spare and repairs Uno45 and replaced the borken on in may car, so thankfully, I now have both hot and cold air in my car, rather than just hot! Alex, you would have been proud, I switched them over in only three times the length of time it would have taken you

However, I have made a bit of a cock up. I ripped out the outer window seals to replace them with longer ones, but now I cant get he new ones to stay in place if I wind the window up I dont seem to be able teo get the plastic strips up either - can anyone offer some tips on getting these to stay in place please?

Gav F - yeah, mine is hardly stable at the best of times. You can hear a high pitched noise behind the speedo as the needle spins around on its' own.

Will check the hand brake tonight, though after I was towed home for a mile and a bit..... with the handbrake on, I think it is a bit knackered :O

Re: Dude! What's wrong with your car?

The window scraper seals click into a small groove thus holding them in place, you need to wind the window down and with a screwdriver press the lower part of the seal into the groove, hard to explain look at the seal closely Ant!

Re: Dude! What's wrong with your car?

Yep, tried that

Still comes out when you wind the window back up
It like the tongue and grove isnt deep enough, or the angle is too shallow so it just pops out.

Was going to call in on Jai at the weekend but ran out of time

(appologies for my horrible spelling in the last post - edit timer has now run out )

Re: Dude! What's wrong with your car?

My headlining looks horrible.

I have a stonechip on the screen.

I have 2 small indentations on the NSF wing.

I have a 1mm rust/paint bubble on the bottom edge of the NSF wing.

I have rust staining on the front pannel to inner wing gussets.

I have a diff driveshaft seal leak.

I have a broken wheel on the drivers seat runner.

My wheel trims are kerbed.

Someones hit my rear bumper in the middle (looks like a towball).

Theres a 2" scratch on the front of my bonnet.

My engine needs cleaning.

5th gear is a bit obstructive.

The stereos crap.

I think thats it!

Re: Dude! What's wrong with your car?

Any ideas on my window seal problem?

It just doesnt want to stay in

Am I missing something obvious?
The haynes manaul is useless, it just says "Refitting is the opposite of removal. Complete the steps in reverse order", so we did, and it hasn't fixed it.

Also, with regards to the distributor oil leak, is there a specific part that needs to be replaced (after removal from another Fire engine), or will a standard rubber O work? I'll probably be taking this down the garage for them to fit rather than do it myself, I dont want to leave a horrible oily mess on the road

Thanks in advance.

Re: Dude! What's wrong with your car?

LOL, love the thread title

Here's a partial list of the worst things in my life!

- Uno Turbo:
Grey primer on welded sill rust repair, needs filling and painting and plastic sill/wheelarch trim refitting, front wing also needs proper sealing. Ditto for the grey primer above left-rear tail-light. Much of interior missing as quick weight-saving for 'racing'. Windscreen wiper motor is slow to the point of stalling, needs replacing. Due a WOF check. Registration (licensing) on hold (exemption), has been in garage for six months. Battery probably needs a charge.

- Alfa Romeo 164 (ALFALX):
Paint chips on bonnet, cracked front bumper, broken foglight filled with rusty water, disconnected to pass WOF three days ago. Cambelt change long overdue, engine seeps oil all over cambelt and exhaust, but fortunately doesn't leave puddles. Aircon discharged. Clutch heavy. Few knocks and creaks from suspension and creaks from leather interior.

- Alfa Romeo 164 (SA989):
Stuffed clutch. Brakes slightly imbalanced - sticky proportioning valve? Faded interior though that is hardly unexpected considering it's 20 years old. Likewise the non-working aircon and the dead left-rear electric window. Clearcoat has failed on bonnet - and roof, and bootlid, and, well, basically any horizontal surface. Engine valvegear noisy - and overdue a cambelt change. At least there seem to be no oil leaks.

- Alfa Romeo 164 (AHK-something, I haven't even learned the registration yet!):
Engine is back together but hasn't run for four years - previous owner attempted a cambelt change and never drove again... Probably best to assume engine damage: luckily I happen to have a spare engine. I guess I therefore have four identical '89-'92 12-valve 3L V6 engines all in about the same condition. Some interior trim missing off driver's door, wing mirror broken, rear bumper cracked. I decided not to start on this one until #2 is ready.

- 124 Spider:
Horrid orange vinyl interior starting to fall apart. Some paint defects including cracks, chips, and blisters. Major structural rust in front suspension mountings. I spent a week rebuilding the brakes and now this... Hence, off the road until I regain my patience to fix it. Maybe next summer.

- Punto Sporting:
Tint film on rear window has some bubbles/wrinkles. Small chips in paint inside wheelarches. Passed a WOF today - yet again, no problems

Assuming you're talking about the seal strip at the bottom of the door window...
Use a screwdriver, parallel with the window glass, to push the folded-over lip of the plastic strip downwards and outwards under the door metalwork that it clips to. You might find it easier to remove the door trim and work from underneath. On front doors you can also get a good idea of the situation if you wind the window all the way down and start at the front.

Re: Dude! What's wrong with your car?

So take that plastic strip off, connect the rubber to it, then push the plastic strip down into place, yes?

Tried that at the weekend and it seemed to be stuck firm, will try again tonight though, inbetween eating cake

Edit - forgot to add that my Uno stinks of petrol after a drive, not sure if this is because of my driving "style" or if the petrol is running too rich. Tips?

Edit 2 - Loius - would the instrument panel fit in my Uno ok? I could do with a rev counter actually I assume that the plugs would all link up ok? Its a Mk2 Start Fire thingy me doody with 4 wheels.

yep, will need 1 wire running to the coil (maybe with a fuse in) and rev counter fires up. it's been in my 999CC uno for a few years now . will fit in any MK2, and the plugs all plug right in.

it's a relatively easy fit too, tricky bit is matching the mileage up, but I can do that for you if you want.
