The Plan
Take two FIAT Uno's and make one good one out of all the bits.
Then drive the Fuct FIAT from Merseyside to Normandy's stunning capital, Rouen, and then rattle our way through 2000km of the most stunning scenery to Europe's most westerly point, Cabo da Roca in Portugal.
Then we return via Northern Spain, maybe a visit to Bilbao, ferry from Santander and drive home back to Merseyside.
All in the name of having fun and raising money for Gemini.org
Oh, and saving an Uno from the scrappers as well . . .

The Story
We have a FaceBook Group [for those that are interested] that is 'open' for all to see, you can find it here . . .
FucTFIATGroup on FaceBook

We also have a charity donation web page that you can find here
FucTFIAT justgiving donation webpage

The Car
And here is the car bought from the classifieds of this very Forum for £70

I hope some of you follow our progress with interest . . . .

The red five door [breaker] Uno ran sweet as a nut all the way from merseyside to worcestershire this afternoon.
Even though the M6 with a 4 speed was a little reeevvvvvyyyyy ;)
It's little 999cc FIRE engine with only 61k will be perfect for the long run to Portugal . . .
once it has the five speed box attached to it(y)
Just need to start the engine swap once I get back to merseyside. . . ;)

On the way back;worcestershire to merseyside; the traffic was terrible
Got stuck stationary on the M6 between Stafford and Stoke because someone had managed to turn their car over and everyone driving past it wanted to rubberneck:bang:
Managed to keep the temp down by putting the heater on:devil:

n542269946_1932882_6048843.jpg

Then on the M56 it happened all over again because of a crash where the M56 meets the M53; squashed Corsa; front and rear MasHeD(n)
This time was stationary for longer watching the temp REALLY CLIMB
n542269946_1932883_7449465.jpg

This second time the Uno started to steam:cry:
BUT windows open
Heater on FULL
Got HoT feet
BUT the motor survived(y)

The Blue Mk2 will be the Sucata Run Car

Yeah, driving the MK1 until midnight when its tax runs out;)

Then ripping the 61k engine out to drop it into the Mk2 that already has an MOT till 25th Oct but a knacked engine

The fan was working, just so flipping hot on Friday

But before we go to Portugal the BlueMk2 will get a second [pusher] fan fitted in front of the rad with a variable temp sensor and manual overide switch [as I already have the parts spare from my Zuki Jeep off-roader]

Also looking to get another Mk2 bonnet to chop vent holes into and fit some X1/9 plastic side vents [again spare parts I have already] to give the Sucata Car more of a BanGeR RaCeR feel

Pix to follow . . . . ;)

Sorry to be an alarmist but I'd be very worried about the temperature going that high on a 999cc FIRE engine with a working radiator fan. The fan should kick in at around 90 degrees on the temperature gauge and in all the driving I've done in my Uno FIREs, including in temperatures much hotter than we've had this year, the gauge has never gone much over 100 degrees. This included summer 2003 when temperatures broke records.

For the gauge to go that high I'd check the radiator cap (might be something as simple as this), the thermostat for sticking (in the closed position), the radiator for blockages and the oil and coolant for signs of head gasket failure. Any mayonnaise/ sludge evident in the oil/ coolant will be a definite sign of a failed head gasket. Also check the entire cooling system for any signs of leakage as this can reduce pressure and consequently lower the coolant boiling point, which can then cause overheating.

Best rule out any problems like this before undertaking the trip to Portugal, not least because the weather will be much hotter down there. We want to see the Uno come back in one piece!

Ta for the tips
The BlueMk2 Sucata Car actually has a new rad on it
But that rad will need a good flush as the headgasket has deffo gone on that car
The motor out of the RedMk1; that ran hot on Friday; seems fine
As you say it may well be that the thermostat is stuck or the rad cap is duff
so will check those out when doing the engine swap. . .

Latest update is that I have done a test fit of the type of alloy and rubber I intend to run the BlueMk2 with for the run . .

Deffo looks better than the steelies with puny 135s

X1/9 alloy with 185/60/13

The alloys will be painted matt black and the rubber will be brand new as I've seen a great deal from Ears Motorsport in Macclesfield for a set of 4 tyres in that size . . .

OK...In between the rain showers I chopped up the replacement white grille that I got off eBay for 99p and fitted it in a VERY rough state to the FucT FIAT.

The idea being that one big slot will allow more cool air through to the radiator and the air intake......making the motor run CooLeR.

Also done a deal on some -35mm lower springs for £25 ...so ...d o w n... is the way for the Fuct FIAT to go....

Tried to fit an Abarth Steering Wheel I had off my X1/9.
BUT the boss doesn't FiT....

Engine transplanted
Started first time
Ran rough at first because of my school boy error
Forgot to reconnect the servo vac hose to the inlet manifold
Reconnected it and now running sweet

Next MaJoR problem.....
Fuel tank [plastic] from Mk 1 does not fit the Mk2 Spi
As the Mk2 uses a metal tank with the fuel pump inside it...DoH!
So desperately need to find a Mk2 metal tank.......PRoNtO!

Coughtcoughlouiebeemighthaveonecoughcough.

No idea where you can find the fuel tank.
Tried a local scrappies?
