I recently swapped the 999cc engine in my 1990 Uno for the 1108 FIRE, however it refuses to run properly. Mainly it will not pick up properly from low revs takes ages to rev up from full throttle at tickover, and needs about half throttle or less until about 3000rpm-ish. Once above this speed it runs reasonably but still seems a bit 'flat' in acceleration. I have tried altering the ignition timing, which improved it a bit but the timing is now the most advanced it can be i.e. at the end of adjustment. I'm not entirely sure if the vacuum advance unit is faulty, it doesn't draw air, so the diaphragm is ok, but doesnt have much movement on it... is this likely to be the culprit??

Have also tried adjusting the mixture on the carb which doesnt make much difference to it......

Any help much appreciated, as I have to drive to London fromm Devon on Friday, and the MOT is coming soon...

How did the engine run before the swap?I found a few duds in my time.Check the plugs, leads , and clead the carb.then reset the timming to the specks on the manual.:D then say how it runs after.

Have you checked for airleaks around the carb and inlet manifold?
Would be a good idea to check the following
Cam timming-Has the belt been replaced
Valve clearances
Carb base for any problems
Main and idle jets are very small-clean
Water in the fuel can cause all sorts of unusal symptions
Distributor-vaccum advance(diaphram gets a whole in it and can
cause a huge lack of power)

Distributor pickup wires

Have owned a couple of 45 fires, they are a very good engine but the ignition and fuel system need carefull and continuous maint to keep these little engines running sweet.
Have fun.

Still not 100%, though it has made two trips from Devon to London, however there is slight pinking at high revs (ie 55mph in 3rd or 75 in 4th), which really could do with being sorted.

I think I'll check the cam timing, I replaced the belt and bearing, and may have accidentally got it a tooth out.... which sounds logical.

Rich- sorry the 999cc engine has to go back in another Uno sometime, and needs some work ie. loads of oil leaks, water pump, alternator, cam bearing, however there are often a few engines on ebay, or spares cars...good luck with it!

Sorted it! Turned the cam forwarda tooth on the belt and reset the ignition timing, now drives a hell of a lot better and smoother tickover. Also pulls up hills in 4th that it was struggling in 3rd on, so hopefully that shoul be the end of it. Cheers for the help folks.
