Hi everyone,

I have been a vouyer on the forum for quite some time. I have decided to fancy-up my Uno mkII 1.0 i.e a bit and i need a bit of advice. I have one of those 2000 Unos made in Poland with a barebone dash (speedo, fuel, and temperature warning light only) so i really miss a tachometer and a trip meter. From old posts i can see that it is quite easy to replace the dash with on from an old SX or turbo model.

Since i was not being successfull in obtainig one on the used car parts markets here in Skopje, Macedonia, i was wondering if dasboards from any of the other models from the Fiat group would fit in an Uno mkII, both mechanically and electrically?

Aditionally, my first attempt to remove the dashboard failed. I managed to pull the dash just enough to access the cover of the internal lighing. I guess the speedo cable is blocking me. There is no way for me to put my hand behind to disconnect the electrical connections and the speedo cable, the space is too tight. Any way around that?

Hi, welcome to posting on the forum

Just a quick reply but generally the best way is to find the speedometer cable in the engine bay - I don't know exactly where this is for left-hand-drive, but will be somewhere near the brake booster and a fairly thick cable about 6mm in diameter which runs down to the differential gear casing on the gearbox. Push the cable through its tight rubber grommet while you have the instrument panel loose. If you need extra slackness to push through, just unscrew it from the gearbox and pull off.

I don't think that any other FIAT instrument panel will be interchangeable, so my best suggestion would be to buy one off eBay - if you can find one? - from Germany, France, Italy, England, etc.

You may need to add some additional wiring from the ignition coil for the tachometer. You will also need the temperature sensor off a FIRE engine (on the cylinder head behind the cam pulley) that was fitted to a car with a temperature gauge (in other words, your engine just has a switch for the light, you need a gauge sensor).

Anyway, best of luck! :)

PS. (Off-topic)
I've been reading about your beautiful country on Wikipedia, since I must confess to a poor knowledge of your part of the world. I wondered if English was an official language there (I see it isn't) because your post was so well-written. I see that the population is only 2,038,514 but then again the land area is fairly small and I guess that the mountains formed natural borders. Very interesting but also irritating to read of the trade sanctions and embargoes that we tend to hear very little about. Does this affect buying things off eBay, I wonder...

Loosening the speedometer cable from the engine bay side mught just do the trick. (y)

I have already located the ignition coil connector (the 4-wire plug) for the tach. The colours of the wires are sightly different than in 30202-fitting-sx-clocks-mk2-1-0-ie.html#post347693. I will post the photo for advice as soon as i have athe actual tachometer to connect. :) As for the temperature gauge/indicator, i guess i can find a new temp sensor at the local car parts shops. If not, i can live with warning light only.

As for the e-bay scenario, i thought of that but... Payment with credit cards or PayPal is not a problem. The potential problems are with the shipping. It is quite possible that the shipping alone might cost arround 20 - 30 Euros. Additionally, the postal worked thah jandle package deliveries are no known for their honesty if you know what i mean :(
