| What gearboxes fit a 1.3? Folks, Just smashed up my 1.3 gearbox today, had 2 spares, but they're from 1108cc cars and neither will fit. So what gearboxes do fit the 1.3? Any ideas? Tom

| Re: What gearboxes fit a 1.3? Often they are the same, just different bell housing. If you are keen you could build a good gearbox using the inside bits of an 1108 box with the bell housing of your current box. Just look to see if the gear linkage conenctions are the same, if they are then give it a shot ![]() Note: the four and five speed boxes are very similar, they just have longer internal shafts, an extra chamber on the end, and obviously gears for fifth gear. If your 1108 boxes are four speed, just make a four speed box and dont bother with fifth gear (unless you are real keen). Start with pulling your dead box apart (if nothing it will be an interesting exercise)

| Re: What gearboxes fit a 1.3? Casing from original box is ****ed, driveshaft munched itself and the box. The other boxes look fine from a gearchange / clutch perspective, it's just the bellhousing pattern and starter motor size/location is the problem. Need to hit the scrap yards tomorrow and see what I can find, so just looking to see what other models should fit the 1301cc engine.

| Classic Uno Obsessive | Re: What gearboxes fit a 1.3? The mk1 gearboxes fitted to the early 1116cc and 1301cc engines are the same as those fitted to the mk1 999cc FIRE engines. The differences are the bellhousing and final drive. The later 70SX models used an updated Strada based gearbox. I looked at fitting a 1301cc gearbox to my original mk1 999cc FIRE so I could convert from 4 to 5 speed. However, the bellhousing also locates the gearshafts so it's a lot more hassle than just swapping it over as you have to have the right gaskets and ensure that everything is lined up. I think you have to check for endfloat as well. Similar gearboxes were fitted to the Fiat Strada/ Regatta and also the Lancia Delta 1.3/ 1.5 engines as these used the same basic engines as fitted to the Uno. Other possibilities are the Fiat 128 models though I'm not sure if these were the same gearboxes. However, all these models are very rare and you'll be very unlikely to find one in a scrap yard. Your other option is to look at the mk2 Uno and Tipo gearboxes fitted to the 1.4/ 1.6 models. These are evolutions of the 1301cc Uno engine but the 'boxes are quite different (hydraulic actuation and different linkages for a start). If you were to find a 1.4 Uno you should be able to swap the gearbox over with all the associated parts. Sadly, most of the 1116cc/ 1301cc Unos have been wrecked by grass track racers so they are now virtually extinct. I doubt if you'll find any to take a gearbox from. In fact I've seen only three mk1 70SX's turn up on Ebay within the last year, one of which is now mine

| Classic Uno Obsessive | Re: What gearboxes fit a 1.3? Mk1 999cc as I mentioned above. The mk2 999cc Unos used a later gearbox (the very last mk2's used a Punto based gearbox). There may be some crossing over but as far as I'm aware all mk2 Unos used a later type of gearbox compared with mk1's. I had a list of gearboxes used somewhere but can't find the list ![]() Your best bet is to find a 1.4 mk2 Uno and use the gearbox/ linkages/ hydraulic clutch arrangement with you 1301cc engine. Simply because the 1.4 gearbox should be a lot easier to find compared with a mk1 1301cc gearbox. Your last option is to use a Uno Turbo box, but again you'll have to swap over linkages/ clutch arrangements, plus the UT uses different driveshafts. On top of that the UT boxes are quite in demand and are more likely to fetch good money. Once upon a time second hand Uno gearboxes were everywhere...

| Re: What gearboxes fit a 1.3? My engine code is 138B2, which apparently is from a Regata, would that have any bearing on what gearboxes suit?

As I mentioned in a post above, the Regatta engine should also use the same gearbox. But you're still left with the same problem of actually finding one that's being broken for spares. Basically most late mid to late 80's Fiat models using the 1116cc, 1299/ 1301cc and 1498cc ohc engines should use similar gearboxes, as do a couple of Lancias.

| Re: What gearboxes fit a 1.3? Back to plan A, see if I can get the original bellhousing welded. It's cracked the mount area off, and also smashed around the drivers side cv mount/face.

| Back once again w'the... | Re: What gearboxes fit a 1.3?
Your best bet is to convert to an Uno Turbo gearbox (in my opinion) - the later Mk1-style ('top linkage') is to be preferred and there are probably quite a few around, as it's the same gearbox in the Mk2 Uno Turbo. This gearbox bolts on to the engine type you have (as it fits the 1301cc Uno Turbo or 1372cc Uno Turbo). You'll need the driveshafts and hubs as well (they're bigger). And you'll need the gearchange linkage, as it's different (and better). -Alex
