Mot.......

well after all the work, from pete and chas, it was time to suck it and see...

and the result, well not a monumental fail, but a fail nonetheless, and some of the items are just cringeworthy....

1) n/s headlamp aim too low
2) rear lights too bright, brake lights too dim
3) n/s/f tyre tread depth below legal
4) exhaust leak in manifold down pipe area
5) fuel leak in tank area

advisorys:

6) surface corrosion to all discs
7) handbrake efficiency on limit, too much travel on brake
8) play in anti roll bar bushes
9) travel in foot brake

the funny thing is the dreaded uno killer, rust, was not even a remote issue, he said everything he could see and test was solid and well covered!!!!

so where does that leave the tub?

1&2)well the lights are easy enough to sort, adjust the fronts, and swap the rear bulbs round...
3) new tyres all round, about £120odd......
4) either it's worked loose and needs tightening, or it's cracked, i have three spare, so we'll see.....
5) no idea on costing this, but will require some investigation
6) new discs allround and pads....about £100
7) a little cable adjustment, in conjunction with new pads and discs....
8) 4 new bushes....no idea on cost......cant be much
9) brake pedal adjust, should be easy....

so all in all not too bad, maybe a weekends work.....perhaps brooklands is possible after all......

Re: Mot.......

Wow is this the UT you're getting back on the road. Sounds like it's almost there!

As for the fuel tank, if it's leaking you can buy some sort of tank sealant from the likes of Frost.

1) n/s headlamp aim too low

That's the one we changed yesterday. Adjust it

2) rear lights too bright, brake lights too dim

Ah, I remember now that the running lights should be those small 5w bulbs, not the bigger ones that we fitted - fit some new ones. Don't remember the brake lights being too dim though?

3) n/s/f tyre tread depth below legal

Fit new tyre. Or part worn for about £15.

4) exhaust leak in manifold down pipe area

Remove and examine.

5) fuel leak in tank area

Need to find where the leak is. If it's from the tank then the tank could be rusty. You can get new tanks for not too much, though I think the UT tank is unique compared with the rest of the range? Otherwise look for a leaking pipe/ loose clamp.

advisorys:

6) surface corrosion to all discs

A few sudden stops from 70mph will sort that out

7) handbrake efficiency on limit, too much travel on brake

Adjust cable?

8) play in anti roll bar bushes

Change bushes. Superflex do them for about £7 each. Fiat probably do them for about the same.

9) travel in foot brake

That's a weird one. Not quite sure what they mean there?

the funny thing is the dreaded uno killer, rust, was not even a remote issue, he said everything he could see and test was solid and well covered!!!!

It does seem to be a remarkably solid shell considering!

so all in all not too bad, maybe a weekends work.....perhaps brooklands is possible after all......

Yay, UT to Brooklands! With a mk1 Uno 70SX as back up!

BTW, I checked your chassis/ engine number details against the Fiat handbook. It's a genuine turbo you have and NOT a re-shell! More good news.

For what you paid for it you got quite a bargain. Almost criminally so!

Re: Mot.......

That’s not bad!!

4) I have a rare exhaust elbow to down pipe gasket.. got 2 together off the bay and only need 1.

5) just to add I've seen a rear fuel filter which was so old it had rusted through and begun too leak .

If it's the pipe between the tank, filter and or pump it's a rather rare 12mm braded. I think Ant has a spare length .

6) if the disks are pitted, what are the pads like?

7) it’s an Uno .

9) Fit callipers from an Uno 45 to reduce the travel seriously any air in system Chas will soon have it out

Re: Mot.......

Mot place should have adjusted the headlight as it takes no time whatsoever , the pedal travel may be due to the rear brake problem, do your pads/discs, bleed the entire system as every 2 years is the recommended interval on most cars anyway, and see how it goes

Re: Mot.......

it's going to be down to the wire, car can't be taken in till wednesday for the exhaust and fuel leak, the former being the result of a right fricking bodge up, invloving sheared bolts and gungum, thankfully the only need it for a few hours, insurance cert should be with me on tuesday, then thursday, get the discs, pads, handbrake and roll bar sorted. friday, back to the mot station for the retest......friday afternoon, get the tax disc on

well that's the plan, mice and men are holding their breath......

LOL - well done!

You got the rear brakes fixed, etc.?

Don't forget to give the cooling system a quick check (if not already done so) - plastic elbow above heater hose prone to tiny splits/leaks that suddenly become major. Also the UT system is hard to fill without airlocks unless the small pipe from the tank to the radiator is first unblocked (at the radiator end).

You probably know all this anyway by know, and - is this your red Uno Turbo in the signature, or another recently-acquired?

Cheers,
-Alex
