(G) Uno grill modified

Hi all,

I took a disc cutter to my grill a few months back and never finished it off - you could say it looks pretty unrefined at the moment.

I was just looking to see if there was an off the shelf solution - like a debadged plastic straight swap replacement?

Or am i better off using a bit of fibre glass and filler on the one i've got?

never mind, i was watching dave on the telly quite bored (day off today), so grabbed nearest tool i could find - swiss army knife - and i finished off chopping out the grill - i then found some old isopon fibreglass out of the shed and ive fibreglassed a couple of the "holes" - pics to follow, my god it stinks in this house now.

todays top tip?:
make sure you do anything with strong fumes out of the house OR in plenty of time before the missus gets home!... yikes!

I think there are/ were some aftermarket grills available but I have no idea where. Mk1's tend to look best with the standard grill and most I've seen with modded examples look cack. Mk2's look better though be careful as cutting out the centre bars makes it look like a Nova grill! A number of people have done what you are doing to the mk2 grill so do a search and you should find some examples.

yeah cheers, although i did find myself searching, but then realised i was just wasting time of which i dont have much these days, so just got to it. attached is some progress pics.

Yeah im aware the fiat badge is missing out of the grill which is bloody annoying (dont know where im going to get me one of those!)

The car had some slight front damage before i bought it - so the grill is already a bit broken (means im not so worried about chopping it up).

The same goes for the front bumper, when it comes to mounting intercoolers etc, i wouldnt think twice about taking a disc cutter to the bumper

interesting, but i do prefer to use fibreglass as its a far more flexible solution - i find filler cracks after a year or so and i cant be arsed doing jobs more than once. so plan is to let the fibreglass set so its rock hard.
then apply some fine filler and sand it down etc..

you didnt see the whole of the job i did, that was just the end of the last thread (took me long enough to find that!) i used a 2 pack flexible glue to bond it, with the spare bits of plastic i removed (the slats )behind the holes as to strenthen the grill, because when you remove the slats all the strenth has been lost, then then sanded it smooth then a fine skim of filler, then prime and paint, fibreglass doesnt adhere as well as people think, and isn't very flexible which will crack and sink due to the heat of the rad etc, ive seen loads of uno fans go down this route which is why i did a thread The right way, only been in the job 20 years!! Ant!

just done my front grill looks fantastic , bear with it mate and go for it ,as for bumpers do as u feel but dont go over board ,can send u pics of my project if u want intend to have best uno in the country a bold statement but i do

bumper already cracked as it was cat c damaged before previous owner - something tells me a front mounted intercooler might be wanting to get stuffed in there (but that can wait until after respray welding etc etc)
