Hi
have just got a 92 uno 45 fire, seems like a good car, low mileage 3200, very little rust(really), starts and runs great, but above 35mph it starts to make al ow rumble \hum which gets worse as speed increases, at 75 it is a VERY loud howl. If you knock it out of gear the noise doesnt change indicating it is not engine noise, it doesnt change going round corners ruling out CV joints and wheel bearings. Are these just really noisy cars or is there something else it could be, the car had been stood for 18 months before I got it. Any advice info gratefully recieved
Thanks
Tony

If it's not related to engine speed I'd say it was wheel bearings. Could also be a problem with the discs/ brakes dragging/ grinding.

Can you pin point where exactly the noise is coming from? Front or back? One side, both sides?

If it comes in above 35mph whatever gear you're in then it has to be chassis related. It could even be a differential problem in the gearbox (this will still be turning even if the car isn't in gear). Have you checked the gearbox oil level?

My thoughts exactly. Wheel bearing or seized brakes.

Thanks for the input, definately not the brakes as I went right through them as they were seized solid, this noise is certainly at the front, never done front wheel bearings on an uno, do they need a special tool to press to them, have checked gearbox oil, wouldnt a diff problem change noise going round corners as the diff started to work, is there any way to identify adiff problem without stripping the gearbox?
again thanks for any advice
Tony
