Windscreen VIN condensation

Hi,

When I took the Ulysse in recently to order warranty parts, the VIN was taken off the windscreen. It is in the centre, just below the wipers.

BUT mine had condensation over it, impossible to read. Dealer was already aware of this, and is going to attempt to fix it. I think it will involve removing part of the dashboard, and inserting some device to clear the water! Should be an interesting exercise.

Anyone else noticed this yet?

Stuart

Hi,

No probs. The dealer said the device shipped in to them is a bit Heath Robinson. He wouldn't elaborate too much, but Fiat are now aware of it at least.

Overall, I am still happy with the car - any new model is bound to get teething problems [although Keggers prob getting more than his fair share]. At least the dealers are aware now, mainly due to this Forum!

Your right there, a "few" little problems with a new car range/model is ok anyone would go alone with that, However this will be the 20th defect or as fiat say " not quite sure about that but I will check"

Spotted this problem on mine also (after reading the thread here). Mine is going to the dealer for a couple of days as of tomorrow while they swap the exhaust (there's something loose in in rattling around), and find and fix whatever is causing an annoting squeak (which they have witnessed) whenever I go around corners (possibly something with the suspension). It'll give them something else to do I suppose! :-(

Stuart - who is your dealer? I showed the problem to mine, and they said they could do nothing?

Took my car into the dealers this morning to (I hope) get all the bugs & fault sorted out!

I told them about this problem & was told right away they will see if they can get the ok from the area manager to replace my windscreen!

See if any of you get offered this? as it is differnt to what the first person was told by his dealership?

Hi,

Apparently Fiat are aware, and that is why they are going to fix it without a windscreen replacement. You may find that a new windscreen does nothing to alleviate the problem, after all it depends on the sealant they use.

I feel it is something more inherent, but we shall see. Haven't had it sorted yet, so not sure of the final solution!

Please keep us up-to-date on how you get on with this, as I suspect there'll be a few of us waiting on your outcome before we pursue similar activity!

No probs John - car going in next weekend, so we shall see! I don't particularly want a new windscreen, coz I feel this may bring on extra problems as a knock-on effect!!!! I am just curious about this contraption my dealer has come up with.

Hi,

After my brothers experience I would never have a windscreen replaced unless it was a last resort. He has a 525 BMW and the windscreen got cracked by a stone. The first screen was fitted by RAC Windscreens and the auto wiper sensor didn't work due to it being a pattern part, the second screen was fitted and was slightly high so there was wind noise, but the wiper worked (BMW screen). Unfortunately they scratched the paint work on the pillars removing the previous one. It then went to the body shop to be sprayed and have the third screen fitted. This time it was fitted well, but the wiper didn't work (pattern screen again), it was also painted the wrong silver. Back it went for the fourth time for another re-spray and proper BMW windscreen. This time it was fitted well, was the right colour but they broke the auto wiper control box. Fortunately this is not on the windscreen, so it is a simple part to repair.

After that story I will avoide a new windscreen for as long as possible.

Also can't see how it will fix the condensation problem which is caused by a poor flow of air to the VIN number area. I would have thought they would have to put a vent in the dashboard near the plate.

Poggy

Hi,

I think that is what this contraption does - it makes a hole near that area to allow more air [if not some!] to circulate.

You are totally right about the windscreen. Can you imagine Autoglass coming up with the right goods? I have auto wipers sensors and auto lights - no way would that work after a replacement!!!

Well like I said took the car in on thursday for "2" days like they said , At 3.45 friday I called to find out what time the car would be ready only to be told "tuesday night but best say Wednesday" :(

they said there was faults in my screen, eg air & water leaks at both top corners even though before christmas they checked it & said it was fine!

They are stripping the screen out & dashboard , I guess then they are going to use the gizmo Stuart said about to get more air to flow though!

Also all the light units back & front are being changed but they are still having problems about the wind noise! As I was told by a service "manager" (I think thats his job title) "It can take up to SIX months to find a leak!

But I did get my rear 12volt socket fitted though!:):):):)

I will let you all know how I get on when (& if) I ever get my car back!

I wont say on here the name of my dealer but if anyone wants to know just send me a private message ok?:D

Paul

Well after my car being in Fiat for 9 days the screen is still the same!

Went back over there today for the software 5.40 upgrade & asked about the windows.

Was told by the tech who did all the work last week on my car that fiat(UK) told them to make a hole in the rubber seal behind the screen & force the water out uning compressed air & then seal the hole up, Which they did. however the condensation is still there & getting worst!

If anyone on here knows any other things that may help please let me know

Thanks

Paul
