Power loss and emission error on 2.0 16V

Hi,

I've been really happy with my new Ulysse (2.0 16V Eleganza) which I've had for a couple of months (apart from ripping one of the sunblinds last month as I opened the door in the dark!). I've particularly enjoyed playing with the telematics system.

However, I've had to book it in to the dealership tomorrow as I had a strange engine problem yesterday. The vehicle lost power and an emissions error appeared on the monochrome telematics screen. The engine management light came on too, but has now gone off. The vehicle is still driveable and isn't now showing any errors on the displays, but the engine has noticeably lost power.

I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow. Hope I've still got a vehicle by the end of the day.

Dan

Hi Dan,

Welcome to the Forum!

Interesting note about the sunblinds - ours are up ALL the time, and never had this problem BUT I know it was an issue with earlier models [see another thread about that]; hopefully covered by warranty.

As far as engine problem, not experienced it myself [have 2.2JTD] - maybe one of our petrol users can enlighten?

Hi,

No problem with my petrol verion Eleganza Auto. My BMW had a problem once and to protect the engine it switched to an emergency program which allowed me to drive but with a lot less power.

Have you checked the alarm log on the computer. If you go into the main mene and select on board computer there is a sub menu called alarm log. Have a look in there.

Let us know how you get on.

Poggy

Hi,

a lot of cars have this 'get me home' mode, mainly the ones with proper engine management systems.

Be interesting to see what the dealership comes up with!

Dan D, I had the same problem with sunblinds on my car, both were destroyed. Took it to the dealer who said they would fix it under warranty (£200 each to replace) and later admitted that there is a design issue with them. That's the good news, bad news is that 9 months later they still haven't been able to replace them. I'm told now that my complaint re this (and other problems) has now been escalated to head office and is a "Red Alert!". Still doesn't make them phone me any quicker though!!

Hi Keggers!

Wow - I knew yours was a potential "misbuild", but still to be going on at this time. I remember your original thread about the sunblinds - ours are up 100% of time, so obviously been RE-DESIGNED.

Hi,

Happy to report that I've got the car back today and it's fixed. The dealership told me that a connection had fallen off so it switched to 'get me home' mode as you all thought.

I made the mistake of also asking them whether they could activate the connect service. After much discussion they basically told me they couldn't activate it and that I should (again) contact Fiat customer service as there was little they could do without my 'form', which I haven't got.

I'll start adding my progress on this under one of the other relevant threads.

Dan

Hi Dan,

It is up to the dealership to get the right form - I am sure all of us on here who are connected got the form this way; the dealership needs to write information on it to fax it to Head Office.

Be interesting to see what Fiat 'customer' services come up with!

Poggy,

My problem was simply a loose connection in the engine compartment (one of the electronic ignition connections I think they said) which had sent the car into 'get me home' mode and when it occured registered as an engine management error (and an emissions error). It got fixed the next day and now I'm a pretty happy Ulysse owner again.

Hi,

From my experience it is not the components which are poor quality or the design, but it is the assembly which is poor.

They just don't seem to pay much attention to build quality. If you look at the component manufactures, they are the same used by german prestige makes.

The dealers are poorly trained by Fiat as well.

Hear hear!

I think the majority of the problems are not down to the Fiat marque as such, but the lack of training given by Fiat UK to their dealers. I have already taken this point up with Customer Services.

Even after the car being out for about a year, the dealers are still struggling to understand it fully.
