Idle Speed

Hi again. Have been keeping an eye on the forum since we got our Ulysse in September - it has been a great source of info (and comfort!)

Just got the car (2004 2.0 Petrol Auto) back after second stint at the dealer (5 weeks this time). Seems like they finally have sorted the auto gearbox problem (*crosses fingers*). However, while testing it, they detected a problem with the engine running, particularly noticeable at idle, described as a 'shudder' which the engineer said happened every 60 secs or so. They changed the exhaust lambda sensor to no avail so ended up replacing the engine management ecu (eventually after being sent the wrong unit TWICE).

Car seems to be driving well but am not convinced that this engine problem is sorted. After pulling up, I left the engine running for a while and it seemed ok, the rev counter showing about 1000rpm. Then after a while it dropped to about 7-800 revs and seemed to splutter a bit before restoring to 1000. This happened a couple of times.

Not sure whether this is the same problem or not. Anyone have any similar experiences/thoughts??

Cheers
Phil

Re: Idle Speed

Get them to check the load on the alternator and see if it matches the engine shudder. Our car is also a 2.0 petrol auto and it seems to correspond with extra electrical loads requiring the alternator to produce more power and hence more load on the engine. The engine management then compensates for the drop in rev's and the engine returns to normal idle.

Re: Idle Speed

Thanks for the info guys. I'll keep an eye on it for a bit I think. I did wonder whether it was 'normal' behaviour. What you describe Poggy does seem to tie in with what happens.
