Hi Guys
I recently bought a new ulysse 2.0JTD which is now six months old,and went on a run to cornwall,350 miles each way. The average fuel consumption was 31 mpg; the majority of the journey was done on the motorway travelling at 80 mph. I had been anticipating a fuel consumption of top 30s to low 40 mpg. According to the manual, on a combined run, fuel consumption should be around 40.4 mpg! Perhaps I was pushing the speed a little. I would like to know if anyone has acheived any better results.

HI

We have a 2.2JTD - on a long trip the other day, including country lanes and Motorways, got about 37. Around town, short runs, we get 30 or so.

Depends on how you drive the diesel. If it is driven like a petrol car, then no chance of economy. Need to use the lower revs more and the torque. Saying that, when I do drive it hard, I get rubbish economy, but that is expected.

Still try and aim for 500 miles to a tank - usually do that.

Re: Diesel fuel consumption

Well, I've never been able to achieve the mpg quoted by some members of this forum - on a good run I could maybe squeeze 35 - until last week, when I had cause to fill up at a BP garage (normally I use my local supermarket). I wasn't even trying to drive frugally, but 1 hr of driving later my mpg indicator was up at 45! I'm sure going to repeat this experiment over the next few weeks. Anyone else noticed a difference in economy by switching garages?

2.0 JTD; no angelification. > 1 yr old, and no bits have fallen off.

Re: Diesel fuel consumption

I've heard a lot of people say that about BP fuel. Maybe the fuel is better.

I will try it in our petrol Ulysse. I can get about 33-34 on a run if I drive normally and thats with an auto box.

Re: Diesel fuel consumption

Well I don't drive mine "economically" and normally get 31MPG
But even if I ty and drive really carefully I'm lucky if I can manage 34 or 35MPG.

Re: Diesel fuel consumption

My consumption is the same as Pat's. The only time I have ever managed good fuel consumption on a long run is when using fuel from Poland, then I got 37 MPG. Otherwise London driving aside I only manage 31 to 34 MPG.

Was the drive for the hour after filling up on reasonably busy motorways? I can get 42-43 at 65-70mph reasonably easily, it's the round town bits that really kills it. I have averaged 37.7 over the last 4000 miles, I spend most of my time on the motorway and don't do that much round town.

I take my daughter to school in the morning which is 3 miles through back lanes and that is where the consumption gets hit most I have found.

To be fair, yes it was, however the number was *45* and I have driven similar journeys before whilst monitoring consumption.

Perhaps unsurprisingly I've found the real killer on consumption are the hills; I happen to live (and commute) in a town with more than its fair share of steep hills; if I'm doing this kind of driving my consumption can average about 28. You can see the consumption dive on the inclines.

I've never had above 35 until this last tankful. Maybe I got given super diesel (BP Ultimate?) by mistake. Or maybe my mpg calculator hiccupped.

Good to know I'm not alone in only normally being able to hit mid 30s. Now, Rich, do you normally buy supermarket fuel?

On the basis that Tesco is less than a mile away, pretty much all the time. I haven't got a BP locally but next time I see one, I'll try it out.

I avoid ALL supermarket fuels - always have done, always will.

I've always been of the belief that all fuels came out of the same pipe in the refinery - a bit like chosing your electricity supplier, and I've never seen a "we don't make diesel for anyone else" style ad - but I'm not an oil industry insider so I don't know.

Re: Diesel fuel consumption

There is a refinery at Fawley across Southampton water and opposite there is a tanker filler station in Hamble and trucks from all different types of petrol companies come out of there. The fuel supplied to supermarkets is just another brand remarketed at a cheaper price. There may be some difference in additives, but it is essential from the same refinery.

One of my friends is a PhD and works for a well known oil company on chemical additives and their stuff is bulk sold to refineries and oil companies.

Re: Diesel fuel consumption

This old chestnut again - multiple threads on this all over the forum, if you search ;)

I know Tesco does not have its own refinery, and therefore uses fuel from the same source as other companies. BUT it is down to the additives put in at the petrol station, by the tanker drivers i.e. NOT put in, in certain cases.

I am not telling you what fuel to use, BUT personally I avoid them, lol, and always have done. I think this is also the view from Honest John, the Telegraph motoring guy.

Re: Diesel fuel consumption

I think so - not sure what and how much, though, and whether any put in prior to this?! Must be some more info somewhere on the 'net.

Re: Diesel fuel consumption

As I have said a million times, if you look at pumps it tells you what BS the fuel reaches and what additives are added, this is definitely true for Asda.

Re: Diesel fuel consumption

I must have missed the other 999,999 times you said it, but surely you could knock up a batch of "performance" additives yourself being a Chemisty almost graduate.

The BS must only apply to the quality of fuel rather than what's in it. Where do you see the additives on the pump.

Re: Diesel fuel consumption

At Asda, I usually only use asda since it happens to be in the right places for me. Next time I fill up there I will right down what it says, it has usually 3-4 bits of info, the quality reference, i.e. BN785 or something, "additives: data".

Poggy, it's chemical engineering, we don't do a great deal of chemistry and I am only a little first year! If I finish the course I will be designing the oil refinary, not the fuel itself, well, it's possible I could do either actually.

Re: Diesel fuel consumption

Ok - Asda/Tesco buy fuel from the main refinery - a Texaco tanker turns up, and puts fuel in to the petrol forecourt tanks - the driver is supposed to add in the additives, as per the contract/delivery, and therefore the BS is achieved.

BUT say the driver is paid CASH not to add in the additives - does he then scrub out the BS number on the pump? Er, no?! Again, this may be hearsay.
