I just bought a 2001 2.0L EL, it seems great but I notice that the rev counter doesn't work. Could this be to do with a sensor on the gearbox possibly??

I got this fixed and I'm posting in case I can help someone else with the same problem. It wasn't anything to do with the rev counter sender. I took the dash out and did some Googling, eventually I came across AK Speedo who specialise in repairing all types of dash instruments including early mechanical stuff. The have a short You Tube video of repairing a similar dash, I enquired as to why the rev counter should be dead and they said that it was likely to be a faulty rev counter pointer motor. They normally sell new ones for just under £25, but as they were out of stock they suggested just buying a new plastic motor cap. It was really fiddly to fit it as everything is quite small and delicate, I discovered that the old cap had a very tiny plastic pin which one of the gear wheels fits on and it had snapped off so causing the needle not to move, I fitted the new cap and now the rev counter is fine. I do have a couple of new problems now though as after replacing the dash the fuel gauge and temp gauges both read too high. A call to AKS needed! http://www.akspeedo.com
