hi everyone, not been on for while due to my mk2 diesel running brilliantly after 176000 miles :)
until monday this week when i was due to move house
steering felt jerky and shaky, there was a terrible noise when moving the steering wheel, like i was trying to kill it !
anyway i had a poke around this morning and found no oil in steering resevoir so i topped it up, started the engine, moved the steering wheel and crawled under neath to have a look !
the terrible noise stopped while there was oil but it was flooding out somewhere on the drivers side above the driveshaft, i didnt have a light to see properly !
so the question is - has anyone had this problem ? or know what could be causing it ? or any other info such as price or difficulty of repair ?
thanks in advance
Andy

Obviously there's a leak - but whether from a high pressure pipe or the rack will only be found by taking a close look with the drivers side wheel and wheel arch liner removed. You might have to clean the area first, too. Have you looked at Eper? (Link on this page, I think.) The fact that it's leaking above the drive shaft points possibly to the pipe connections to the rack.

i managed to get the car on ramps today and found one of the large union nuts ( like a large brake pipe) had come loose !!!!
anyway one of my regular 19mm spanners wont get in to tighten it, so will go shopping tomorrow for something else and of course some more power steering fluid.
hopefully this will sort the problem and it wont have cost much :)

I did think about a tap wrench as I have one but did'nt want to risk rounding off the nut !
So I popped to Halfords and bought a set of stubby spanners whch I did'nt have !
So the job cost under 30 quid for fluid and a set of stubby spanners :)
Just can't understand how the nut came loose as it's never been touched in the 9 years I have owned the car
