Hi all,I'm new here so treat me gently!! I've just acquired a 2001 Ulysee (I live in France) that has been standing for about 3 years after the owner died it's in all round good condition. BUT it wont start I've put a good battery on it and she turns over freely but will not start.I've checked all the fuses I can find they are all good and have now taken the two top pipes off the fuel filter housing and when the ignition is turned on I get a good flow from the right hand side and nothing from the left (could be a return?).The car was used daily until he took ill so there was no problem when it was parked up.I've heard it's not recommended to loosen any thing on the high pressure side so how can I tell if the HP pump is working? Any ideas/help gratefully received.

Probably the immobiliser has lost the pairing with the key fob, try holding the unlock open buttons for 15 secs or so and see if it unlocks the doors remotely

Thanks for that, the doors open remotely and the indicators flash but I've noticed the red light on the dashboard never does anything!

You can just loosen one of the injector unions enough to see if anything squirts out.

Try cleaning all electric connectors with switch cleaner as they may have tarnished due to it being stood so long.

I've got fuel at the injectors so it must be electrical,I'll have a clean up of the connections and see what happens. Thanks

It might be worth having a look at the engine bay fuse box. They get wet! WD40 and a (gentle) bit of hair dryer application?

Thanks for that Brittleware I'll have a look in the morning. I used to live close to you,I was in Crawley. Is the Alfa dealer still in Charlwood and more importantly is the Greyhound/Hungry Horse!!!

I'm not sure if the 2001 model has the same injection system as the Mk2 Ulysse, but it is probably similar. I would start by checking the pressure of the fuel coming from the fuel filter to the HP pump. This can be done by using a dial air pressure gauge clamped to a length of plastic hose and then attaching it to the output connector on the fuel filter. The pressure when you switch on the ignition should rise to around 2Bar.

If the low pressure side of the fuel system is OK, you will need to connect a Lexia or Peugeot Planet 2000 diagnostic system to the car's diagnostic socket. Selecting the engine ECU "Parameters 1" option allows you to see the value of the fuel pressure in the common rail. This needs to reach around 170 Bar before the ECU will open the injectors and allow the engine to start. Lexia/PP200 diagnostic interface leads/software are available on Ebay for under £100. Load the software on a laptop, connect the interface lead to the laptop's USB port and you have a diagnostic system for your Ulysse.

One more thought, there is a small valve in the inlet pipe of the HP pump which is supposed to open at 0.8 bar. If this sticks, it could prevent fuel reaching the HP pump cylinders. If you remove the fuel inlet pipe from the HP pump, using a suitable diameter drill in the inlet pipe orifice, it is possible to feel the valve springing back after you press it in. For a vehicle that has been standing unused for 3 years, it is possible that this valve has become stuck shut. Manipulating it with a drill, or similar tool, should free it.

Wd40 oil should never be used on electrical connectors, although they also have a contact cleaner product, but all switch cleaner is the same so just buy the cheapest brands out there.

Put this number into eBay, very good value for money as the cans are much larger than others.
