smokey ulysse

just thinking of buying a fiat ulysse, i"ve been offered a 1.9 t/d 1996 model for two grand but its a bit on the smokey side(black smoke on start up and acceleration) its been checked out by a citroen garage and they think its the diesel pump (loads of money).does anyone know what else it maybe,any input would be helpful thanks minger

You can get diesel pumps refurbished at a reasonable price I believe.

Hi.
I had much the same problem as you with my 96 td ulysse . it was a faulty EGR valve which controls the the amount of recirculated exhaust gases which return to the turbo . this was stuck in the open position which caused the engine to be very smoky I got a seconhand EGR unit (very hard to fit not for the fainthearted) and my smoke problem cleared up. Maybe you should look into this
