Hi there

Having read several posts here over the last few (frustrating!) days I believe my water pump may have packed in and I just wanted to check if I am right or whether I should save my money towards a new head gasket/ sell it for spares!!

  1. When the car starts and idles (even for 10 minutes) the water temp stays low.
  2. When I drive 1 mile it starts to overheat.
  3. It sometimes un-overheats 2 seconds later - but sometime not :bang:
  4. When it does drop back down it doesn't last for long.
  5. I have loosened the bleed valve at the top of the rad - sometimes I have coolant pouring out, sometimes nothing at all.
  6. I don't seem to be loosing (much/any) coolant.
  7. The oil looks clear/ not mayonnaise!
  8. I have run a bottle of K-seal through anyway.
  9. The fans kicks in OK.
I am sure that there maybe some groans from some of the wiser members of the forum (sorry) but I just want to double check my thinking based to what I have read in previous posts.

Many thanks in advance to any wise words - and thanks to all of you whos posts have gotten me this far!

Hi!

Well I still haven't gotten any further diagnosing my problem - so the car is off the road for now. I have read on another post the there can sometimes be a blockage in the engine - does anyone know what this might be and if there is someway of checking for it? I dare not even drive it to the garage for now (both out of fear for the car and the possible bill that might be waiting for me there!!!!)

Thanks again!

Hi, I have seen some water pumps with a plastic impeller, this can come loose with heat and will not turn and will not show as a leak etc as the bearing and seal are still OK. If I remember correctly about 5 years ago I replaced the timimg belt and pump on my 1997 ELTD and that pump had the plastic impeller, the new one one metal, just a thought!

Thanks Digger58,

Mmm might well be - I have never tackled it before, so I was hoping to try and get a good idea before removing the timing belt etc - it was only changed a while ago. If I have understood correctly the 1.9 TD doesn't have only one 'correct' alignment for the timing belt - so that even if everything doesn't go back in eactly the same position I wouldn't kill the car? Can anyone confirm!? Please!?

Thanks again

The 1.9 Td is very easy to do the timing belt on, pump and cam shaft both lock with a bolt and the crank can be locked by putting an 8mm (I think)tool in behind the starter motor, all is then locked. T

Before I go any further I think it might be a good idea to change the coolant temperature sensor :stupid:- does anyone happen to know what the correct part number is for this (on a Ulysse 1,9 TD)??!!

Thanks
