Locks and Keys for 2nd-hand Ulysees

I have just bought a 2nd-hand FIAT ULYSSE EL TD ESTATE 1905cc (1997-12-31) DIESEL MANUAL and have the following problem:

only 1 key, which spins in driver's lock and sometimes in passenger's too, no fob, so securing and accessing vehicle is not reliable, tailgate seems to be different key which did not come with vehicle.

Being new to this I am quite out of my depth, but an extensive read of this forum suggests there might be possibilities...

My question is what I can do about it.

- can I change the lock barrel (as per other threads here) on one door without affecting the central locking of the rest? This would leave me with two keys, one for driver's door other for passenger's and ignition - but at least it is reliable. Could I get two barrels for one key?

- can I get a fob (don't know if this model has that possibility) which would bypass the spinning lock?

FYI I have no manual, no key number (other than that on key handle SX9T5), code box seems to be disabled.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Oh dear. I'd say a lockset is the only way out but the ignition one will need coding requiring the master key

Re: Locks and Keys for 2nd-hand Ulysees

I had a similar problem. I ended up replacing (well my mechanic mate did) the driver's side lock with a Citroen Xantia one (fitted OK). If I ever get round to it I'll put the other lock from the pair in the passenger door! This change resulted in me having a different key for opening the door but the central locking works OK. I still use the existing key for the ignition.

We tried to fix the remote but it's fubar, but one day I might find one on eBay or in a breakers to replace it with (and it'll need resetting of course)...

Inconvenient but not the end of the world.

Thumbs up Re: Locks and Keys for 2nd-hand Ulysees

The spinning lock thing seams to be common, mine does it some times but if I push the key a little harder its OK. I always wondered if it was a security thing! to stop false keys from opening the door!!! I wouldn't change them unless it won't let you open the door at all.

Re: Locks and Keys for 2nd-hand Ulysees

Thanks for the ideas so far - much appreciated.

So I'm thinking I could replace the door locks, front 2 and possibly tailgate, with new barrels (or do I need whole new locks?) and have a new key for those, but keep the old key for the ignition.

I'm assuming that the central locking is separate from the actual key, so whatever lock (the original or newly replaced one) opens a door, it somehow triggers all the locks centrally. Is that about right?

I don't mind having two keys - much easier than coding a new one for the ignition I suppose - and cheaper. Poor car is not worth so much, so am after a budget solution.

Oh, and how easy is it to replace the barrels or whole locks? Is there a process for this in the Repair Manual available on Ebay?

Thanks again for your help.

Re: Locks and Keys for 2nd-hand Ulysees

Could also look at another fiat model for the locks, and if as i think you said the code box has been disabled then you could fit a new ignition barrel aswell but please don't quote me on that!!!

i'm not trying to sell you anything, but i do have a full lock st replacment for the bravo on here in clasifieds, and if you ask chris or jug or some1 with there level of knolege could be a quick fix,

I'm not sure that the ignition key would need any coding.

My old '96 Ulysse didn't have any coding in the key, and I doubt that they changed the design by '97. When the key broke, I got a copy made with no coding, and it worked ok.
