Hi people:)

I was wondering if someone would be kind enough to help me with something. Before i start, i'll just say that i have the 1.9 diesel multijet model of grande punto.

basically, i was wondering whether it is easy/possible to fit an air filter and a dump valve myself with minimal engine knowledge? i wanted to know so that i can buy them and know that i can do it myself before wasting money on parts that i can't fit.

also, is it worth doing, as in will i notice a positive difference or will any of these cause any performance loss at all?

I have searched this forum for answers but can't find a clear enough one and i've searched Youtube for a video walkthrough, but again have gotten no-where, as all the cars done on Youtube are different than mine.

One last thing, could anyone help me locate my turbo in my engine? i have looked quite extensively and i've no idea where it is:p so if someone could explain/describe where it is, or even show me a picture of the location, i would be much obliged:)

Thanks for any and all responses:)

Depending on the turbo, it either has a dump valve (if so, it'll be a recirculating one) or doesn't need one.

You can't gain any power by fitting one -- they operate only when the throttle is closed! Power gains by fitting a dump valve are rubbish put around by people who don't understand turbos.

There will be folk offering remaps. Just be careful who you trust.

To find the turbo, first find the exhaust manifold. Follow it down and the first big "lump" on it will be the turbo.

Read, read, read, before doing anything.

Hi mate,

You don't have a dump valve on a diesel as a Diesel engine works totally different to a petrol one. There is no throttle flap that closes and blocks the air inlet and therefore no need to dump the excess pressure produced by the turbo. On a petrol car, the closed throttle flap would cause the turbo to stall etc hence the need to "dump" the excess pressure/ air.

However, having said that, you CAN fit a dump valve to a deisel, but it will be purely for show and sound, and will provide you no other gains. It's also not something I would recommend for a novice.

Hope that helps,
Alan

Thanks both for replying. I do want one on though for the noise it makes. How difficult is it to fit exactly? My dad will be helping and has engine knowlege to a point, but not really that much though.

Cheers again:)

Just fit an open cone filter and decat it, will make a whooshing sound, rather like that of a dump valve, don't forget you can decat a diesel as they don't have to have one

cheers mate, but i'm not sure what that means:p what is 'decat'?

i'm very sorry for double posting, but i can't see where to edit/delete my previous post.

anyway, could someone give me an opinion on this please?;

it's only a tenner, which seems really cheap for something to put in my engine, but i dunno really whether it is or not. also, if this is sound, would i just remove my current standard air filter box and put this in it's place, or is there more to it than that?

thanks for any and all replies:)
