I've never done anything as serious as take an engine apart before. Obviously I'm going to have to get tooled up.. I've got a decent socket set but will I also need ribe bits?

Where do I start? (probably not the best sign of confidence) Off with the manifolds and all the pipes?
I would lift the head off with manifiolds. Biggest problem is getting all the pipes off. Make sure you mark the pipes or take sketches and or photos. There are a few!!! Have you got the cam belt cover off? If so, with cam cover off as well, turn the engine over with plugs in and see if the cams move ok. Also check the counter belt is intact. if all seems ok, then its off with the head. Easiest way, is to cut the cambelt, but remember to set the timing marks on the cam wheels to the pointers first. 10k belt cannot be re-used.
I thought i would need Ribe sockets, but mangaged to undo the head bolts with a Torx socket. You will need to budget for a new head gasket and maybe a head skim
Just a thought, if the head gasket has gone and the compression is that bad, you would here the escape gasses when turning the engine over and surely the water and oil would have mixed.

Andy.

Re: Incase you missed it...

Oil pressure was good! Needs an idle valve as mine is toast but then it's off for MOT. Will probably fail on quite a few things but at least I'll have a target!

Gaz's head going well.

Re: Incase you missed it...

She's running. As I say need an idle valve (£200 from Fiat so will be searching the scrap yards for a Coupe). She'll only idle with a crank up of the bypass screw which isn't good for CO on the MOT - scraped past it 2 years ago. Couple of rusty patches on her underbelly and the rear arches but dunno if they're bad enough to fail on mot. Brake discs are very rusty so might need new ones. Then it's a few wiring repairs on the wires to the tailgate and she'll be go!

Re: Incase you missed it...

She only needs the rears (I hope)

Front has Black Diamond drilled and slotted.

Rear is probably the same she was built with. Think they're same size as the 1.4 Tipo fronts.

Re: Incase you missed it...

Well then.

MOT verdict is in. In order of severity - or should that be cost?

Hole in front passenger footwell close to seat mount
Hole in front drivers footwell close to seat mount
Excess corossion to front off-side brake line = it went pop on MOT
Corroded front brake discs
corroded rear brake discs
Near side headlamp inoperative
Offside indicator inoperative
Numberplate lamp inoperative

At least we have a target.
