broken wires

Anyone else repaired their tailgate wires? What did you use - how do you get in?

So far only lost the rear wiper (phew). Still need to get this sorted. Access to the area looks a pain to be blunt. Not looking forward to it.

Hi Hellcat.I have had the wire breaking problem and found that by undoing the locating screw on the tailgate it is possible to peel back the rubber cover sufficiantly to expose enough of each wire for them to be teesed out individually. Once I had found the broken one it was a simple case of solder up/cover with masking tape and then replace rubber cover.

It is probably best to do on a warm day or use a hairdryer or something to make the rubber softer. An alternative is to buy a new rear loom from fiat - but then you have the pain in the backside job of wiring it all in. In my experience it always the wiper wire that goes first.

Don't try using connectors as I did as when you come to reassemble they jam in the rubber cover. Its not a bad idea to bind all the wires with the tape while you are at it.

I was thinking of replacing with 5A flex, or something similar as its flexible, and less likely to harden compared to standard car loom wire.
