Re: fiat tipo air lock in heater

Fill up a Bottle of Water+Anti Freeze

Switch on your Engine

Turn your Heater knob to Full Heat then set it to Full Blast

Open your Radiator cap

Remove the Bleed screw from the water pipe that enters the top of the radiator (follow it backwards it should be clearly visible)

Fill up the radiator with water and look at the water coming out of the bleed valve, when that water it becomes free flowing like a fountain, close the bleed screw.

continue filling coolant until its at the required level

Close Cap, Switch off Engine and you are done.

generaly this will work, but tipos are notourious for airlocks in the matrix.
the way to rid of it, is to wait for the thermostat to open[after doing above steps].release bottom hose to let water out. this should rid of every bit of air. on 1.6, if i remember, there is also a bleed valve at the thermostat as well.

Hi the only bleed valve is on the radiator, the two heater pipes get very hot but only blows cold air,is it posible that the problem is the head gasket?

Re: fiat tipo air lock in heater

does the temp gauge read normal when hot or read lower when hot?
when the engine is hot and fan cuts in, is the bottom hose hot from one end to the other? if not, you have an airlock sorted by bottom hose release or a faulty thermostat.

could be that someone put the heater hoses on the wrong way. try swapping the pipes round for each other . was problem on an old 127 gt about 15 years ago. swapped pipes around and heater worked . if wrong way round water wont flow thru the heater matrix. worth a try. as it only takes a few minutes to check. or the valve on the heater matrix might not be opening to let the water flow. as for bleeding there should be a bleed screw on one of the heater water pipes or try bleeding it by unscrewing the water switch. when a perfect flow of water comes out tighten it up

bryan is the heating getting hot at high revs? and also the temp dial moving hot and cold a lot ?

i have a fiat bravo 1.2 sx 16v on a T reg and i took my car in on thursday and sad to say it was my head gasket blown so hot water was leaking into my cylinders , hope that you only have an air lock though because it has cost me 360.72p for new parts and fitting ( gasket , head bolts , cam belt and tensioners , oil and filter then fresh coolant and the head skimed) , let us know how you go on ?

that sounds awful, afraid i might have the same problem. my coolant keeps bubling out the bottle. is that a symptom? or do i have an air lock?

Re: fiat tipo air lock in heater

If it was a blown head gasket surely there would be water in the oil?
What was the problem in the end

Re: fiat tipo air lock in heater

get the engine red hot so the fan kicks in a couple of times. you need to undo all the bleed screws to get the air out or undo the bottom pipe at radiator to let air out and water run slightly. it will be hot so be careful. this should cure the airlock. btw, have heater on hot.

Re: fiat tipo air lock in heater

I've read this thread and tried to clear an air lock in my blue 1.4 ie, but I don't think it worked.

Symptoms - gurgling, sloshing sound from heater when starting up first thing, also water level in expansion tank low.

The 1.4 doesn't have the bleed valve on the thermostat inlet hose (WHY NOT ????!!!), so I followed the procedure given. As expected, when I removed the bottom hose it gushed a load of water out and wouldn't go back on, so I turned the engine off and followed the refilling process as best I could, with the engine running and the rad bleed plug removed etc.

The heater gave a good blast of hot air so I assumed all was well, but when I started it up a while later the gurgling was back! It may be my imagination, but the temp doesn't get up to half way now either (is this better or worse?).

I didn't have a problem when I refilled my silver 1.4 after changing the thermostat, I don't remember if I left the thermostat inlet hose off when I filled it as this seems to be a high point on the system (hence the bleed plug on the 1.6's).

Any ideas? And how does pulling the bottom hose clear air from the heater?

Re: fiat tipo air lock in heater

To Answer 2 questions:-
The bottom pipe is the lowest pipe and usually where the air gets trapped.
If the heater hoses are hot going into the matrix and hot coming out, then the problem is the heater control valve. Maybe the flap is not moving.

Andy.

Gurgling is normal
Water in tank has to be full or near full

Temp does not go past half way with heater on as we alll know the trick, If ever you are driving and your car starts to over heat. You put the heaters on full blast and it draws hot air away from the engine, hence the temp staying low.
