Another Tipo!

More info to follow. On closer inspection it needs a good bit of work but very solid underneath.

Re: Another Tipo!

More pics to follow, drove nicely on the way home bar a scary incident with the oil light coming on while going around a roundabout! A few obvious issues are a leaking near rear shock and damp off rear brake back plate. Engine is obviously leaking oil somewhere and resembles a damp oil soaked rag! Has a few potential corrosion issues on the rear doors (bubbling rust). Car is very solid underneath which is great. Rust around the sunroof does not fill me with confidence but there are no leaks. I will post more pics when I get the chance. Plenty of other issues on it to keep me busy too!

Re: Another Tipo!

You have experience of how rusty these cars can get, so it sounds like you have a good buy. If its solid behind the front wheels I'm jealous

"... a scary incident with the oil light coming on while going around a roundabout!"

No worries, mine has been doing that, on and off since I bought it 17 years ago.

Seems to be solid enough behind the front wheels!

Re: Another Tipo!

I have been tipping away at the tipo doing a bit of general tidying up such as fitting a wiper motor and arm to the rear screen as it was missing, serviced the engine and changed the rear shocks. A couple of weeks ago however I went to start the tipo as normal it fired up quickly then I switched it off and no start since.. checked all the fuses, relays, ignition switch, have a spark but no fuel delivery, no power whatsoever at the fuel pump. Have a live at 87 on the fuel pump relay but not much else. Checked various wiring diagrams and checked continuity between the fuel pump relay and the ECU.. all ok.. I'm completely baffled by it. Car turns over perfect but not a drop of fuel flowing. Could be something simple but I can't find it! Might be a good time to drop in one of my spare diesel lumps!

Re: Another Tipo!

Good to see you're still making progress (sort of!), the fuel thing seems odd, maybe the earth circuit is bad? Could you have disturbed / damaged any wiring doing you jobs at the rear? It's odd that it ran and then later on wouldn't run.

Can't remember which engine you have - 1.6 injection?

I have a spare used fuel pump somewhere if that's the problem, but I suspect not.

I had a similar funny with my '95 1.4 ie a year or so ago when it ran and then just stopped, no fuel was getting to the mono injector, in fact I've had it twice. Both times it needed the AA to diagnose it and fortunately they had the patience and information to do it.

The first time there was dodgy wiring or a connector in the temp sensor line to the ECU and that disabled the fuel injection, the second time a short section of wire failed in a similar area.

If you've got power to the pump then check it is pumping, I think that if it pumps but there's no fuel delivered then probably the fuel just goes back down the return line and not to the injection hardware, that is disabled for some reason.

If you've got Homestart cover and haven't obviously messed it up yourself then you may get someone to check it out and fix it.

A diesel transplant sounds ambitious! Presumably Ireland won't try to demonise diesel as much as other countries seem to want to!

Good luck.

Re: Another Tipo!

Rust around sunroof... if it's around the mechanism at the front of the unit then you've probably got blocked drain tubes, I had that for years and there was always water getting into the car.

You have to drop the sunroof surround, door / winscreen trim and headling, then rod or flush through the pipes down the windscreen frame / scuttle and out through the front wheel area. A bit tricky with fragile hidden plastic clips, there are some threads on the forum.

Re: Another Tipo!

lovely colour....

I would stick with the petrol engine...you will find it is something simple...I assume you checked the pump was working? I had an intermitting wont start issues a few years back and it was the pump...could be a blocked pipe or petrol filter faulty...

Re: Another Tipo!

Would power to the fuel pump be switched off if the file cutoff solenoid failed to open ??

Re: Another Tipo!

Only joking re the diesel SFB.. I wouldn't have the time but I'm more of a diesel than petrol man. I have removed the petrol pump but haven't had time to test it yet. I have a good pump to replace it if it is faulty.. I'm hoping it is as I haven't time for extensive electrical fault finding.

Re: Another Tipo!

It's highly unlikely that you'll need to undertake extensive fault finding.

Petrol pump was shot on my tipo! Tested it on the bench and dead as the proverbial dodo.. stuck in the new one this evening and car started nearly straight away! Just need to change a leaking fuel hose on the engine and I'm back in business.. it was something simple after all thankfully.
