Technical Sick Tipo...HELP!

Glad to hear nothing catastrophic has happened  as I remember you had a few problems to sort. Ok well fair enough Some1 stole mine once but with only a thimble full of diesel in it they didn't get too far.

Hi Jonti - not much action, I'm afraid.

Been commuting to a new job on the M62 and parking in a dodgy location, so I've been using the crappy Citroen Nemo.

In fact, the Tipo's getting so little action I'm thinking of maybe moving it on.

Shame - it's been fun.

Hope all's well with you and the Tipo-heads!

Don't forget to let me know if you think about selling it later! (y)

Hi guys,

So, my 1989 Tipo is finally running again - it's had a few niggling issues and I've been using my Nemo to commute, so the Tipo hasn't had much action over the last couple of months. Now, I have 2 things left to fix:

1) I powered up the battery to get it started and now the odometer has gone crazy - overestimating my speed by 20mph or so... Anyone know what's going on here and will it calm down? It's the digi dash version, by the way.

2) I finally found where the speed setting for the window wipers is, used the fast setting and it's loosened one of the wipers to the point where it doesn't wipe! I can probably tighten, but how do I locate the right angle to set it (so the wipers wipe correctly, in unison? Looks a bit like guesswork!

Aside from that it's lovely to be back!

SOME fiat's have small dots on the screen to indicate where the wipers should be at Parked - have a look ..you might be lucky.

dash always resets to KMH after power down;)

When the wipers are at park, the drivers side one sits flat, the passenger side one at a slight upward angle so the blade doesn't wipe beyond the screen.

Great news your back on the road, I'm tickled to think of a Tipo on the M62 every day !

Try to avoid the salty days at this time of year

Thanks jonti! That makes loads of sense! Luckily, I'm now working in Liverpool, so it's a five mile drive and a covered carpark!

Thank you, all, for your advice. Truth is I'm way too crap at car maintenance to run a Tipo, but I'm giving it my best shot!

MOT pass!

Massively happy Salvo lives to fight another year - ok four little welds required and an advisory to clean up the boot, but all told could have been much worse.

Next, stereo, hopefully fix an old dent and somehow try to get the heater to work.

Happy days...

Great news and well done in getting Salvo sorted! What is the problem with heater? Mine now fairly toasting my feet following overhaul of cooling system and some fiddly bleeding of heater pipes. Collection of dead leaves in fan assembly didn't help either! Glad we are managing to keep these cars alive as so rare now and still a great daily driver. Would be heartbroken if mine had to go

Hi Iggy - cheers, yes it's wonderful to be back for another year. The heater is clearly knackered - the dial only turns one notch and won't go further, so the heat for the windscreen and cabin is basically non existent. Trouble is, I don't fancy pulling the unit apart to find out what's going on. Advice needed!

Well done, happy days! What did they mean by 'clean the boot' I've just spent a few happy days taking my heating apart, so if you can provide more info. I may be able to give some pointers. Does it blow hot air ok, albeit on position one, so your issue is not having the higher fan speeds?

Hi Jonti, thanks - 'clean the boot' is, I think, is a euphamism for 'uh, there's rust in the boot you might want to look at'! Yes, I get warm air, just can't twist the dial beyond 1. Dial feels more than 'stuck'; seems to be an almighty jam going on. Any help appreciated!

Just checked and there's a heater control panel on the Bay going for £14. I'd have that, hoping the jam is somewhere in the control panel, but... Anyone know how hard these are to install?

You may be best seeing if you can work out what is causing the obstruction. I'm sure your fan switch will be as the TD, the spline of the switch pulls a long 'bicycle' style wire in a black casing which leaves to the right, then loops round behind the console and operates the fan above your passenger's feet. You could either:

1)take the switch panel off, then the 2nd panel off behind that. You can then see, on the reverse of that 2nd panel, whether the back of the switch is intact and able to push/pull the wire normally. If it is, then the problem is probably at the fan end.

2) You could locate the incoming wire coming from the right into the fan area, and you may be able to tell if the issue is there by locating the wire whilst jiggling the switch.

The back of the 2nd panel where the wires are attached can become brittle. I've found these issues with the Liberty (will post when get chance!)

I get that! My DGT is not at your Punto's condition standard, though. Lots of bits to be done to get it right. Wish I knew something about touching up paint, for example, and how to sort that annoying front wing dent. I'll get there! Good to know Salvo is appreciated! :)

I really wish this thread was called something different... I might have to start a new one.
