I've owned my Tipo for all of 8 days and today the back box and part of the mid tube decided to fall off in traffic... Looked OK on the viewing, but clearly wasn't. Arghhh.

So, I've looked online for new parts, but there seem to be quite a few variants of Tipo exhausts out there... Should I get the whole exhaust renewed? Is this a specialist part, or something most garages will stock?

Feel a bit inadequate, but can anyone point me in the right direction?

It's a 1.4 1989 TDS...

I think yours should be common for all Mk1 Tipos 1.4 and 1.6, pre Catalytic converter / injection. So pre-92 basically.

Have a look under the car and identify the components... then you could try to match with say Ebay old stock

Later ones had an underfloor cat box and a pancake type centre box.

Make sure you figure out how many bolts are used on the manifold / downpipe clamp... there were different designs.

Also I found that the manifold / downpipe gasket for my '95 1.4 ie was hard to find.

I'd recommend checking National Tyres website for discount vouchers and seeing if they can find a system... I've always found them very good.

So find someone who can do the lot, or carefully assemble the right bits and get them fitted.

Thanks bluejohn125 :)

Gonna have a look underneath and compare to the links you sent me - which are a massive help!

Spent this morning cleaning the sills, which are totally rust free (phew!). Painting the wipers black next...

Sure I'll have loads more questions over the next few weeks!

search Ebay, :)
some of these parts are now heavily discounted.. as will have sat on shelves for YEARS unused..,(y)

fitting yourself is simple.. just "slit" the original clamp area a little longer and it'll then wriggle off, ;)

Thanks Charlie and bluejohn125!

Think I'll try to replace the whole exhaust and have something bright, shiny and new underneath. :)

There'll be plenty of parts getting ordered I reckon... Currently looking for good period Fiat badges (mine are faded to white) and trying to work out if I can repair/replace one of the bashed up dash air vents... Ah well, that's Tipo ownership for you!

only thing I would add - sometimes different brands use marginally different tube mating diameters..so go for 1 brand..

NEW steel pipes will last for DECADES.. it's only when exhaust gases have been through them that they seriously degrade.

Vents,
pretty sure ALL the dash's are the 1 shade of grey/black

Cheers - 1 brand it is! :)

I'll try to source a vent and maybe try to restore the existing badges (the TDS side badges seem to be impossible to find). Peeps on the net advocate Vaseline... That can't be right, surely?

I never heard of a TDS Mk1 Tipo petrol... I thought they only came as Formula (very basic) or DGT with the electronig (DiGiTal) dash, smart wheeltrims, colour-coded bumpers and electric windows etc.

Mk2s were branded S and SX (conventional dash) in 1.4 and 1.6 petrol (injection + cat), all had electric front windows, sunroof and central locking.

TD was the 1.9 TurboDiesels as I recall, 1.7s were non-turbo.

I'll be sure to mention this to my mechanic Charlie. Not on a Tipo, but the Uno back box took 2 hefty blokes, cutting equipment, blowtorches & a lot of swearing to remove. They actually said I'd have never removed it laying on the drive - so I'm glad I didn't try. :D

Good luck with the Tipo exhaust, there should still be plenty around on EBay.

Thanks :) With bluejohn125's help I think I've found the part... So now I just need 2 hefty blokes!

Yes it should be do-able if not enjoyable at home with assistance... my mechanic always uses a few choice tools like hammers and big levers, and something special for twisting / stretching the mounting rubbers on and off.

When you've done it remember to reverse up abd down the drive to checkit doesn't rattle on anything in either direction...

It will be useful to get it up on ramps / axle stands and have a really good prod along the sills, under the footwell front corners (behind the wheels) and especially the front subframe... classic Tipo rust areas.

I'm in Allerton, bluejohn125!

Currently on the lookout for a decent mechanic, who understands old cars. I think I've found someone nearby, on an industrial site in Speke - out of interest, where's your mechanic located? If he's good, I might bring him another Tipo! :)

What have you done about your exhaust? Ordered a complete system?

You're going to enjoy the sound of a classic unrestricted 80's era Fiat engine with a nice new system... no catalytic converter in the way and an old-school Weber carb supplying the fuel!

I had a 1400TC SuperMirafiori in the past... sounded fantastic and rorty!

...sounds just about right. :)

It's just the exhaust for the moment, but in time I'll go for a more thorough check up.

I'll also need help with the electrical cables that are currently hanging down from the glove compartment area into the passenger footwell. It's basically a cosmetic job, but if I try to gaffer tape the cables I know I'll knacker the electric windows etc. :(

Plus, there'll undoubtedly be other issues to contend with, but I guess it's part of the fun!

Thanks again, all.

Yes, I'll be ordering a whole new system. No cat, nothing fancy. I like engine noise and this one (when working) purrs. ;)

Have you thought about going badge free?

I removed all badges front and rear and I call her Incognito. Ö¿Ö
