Hi folks

I suspect there is a problem with my fuel pump but can't find it as it isn't in the engine compartment where the haynes manual says it is. Fuel filter is located back near the tank does anybody know where the pump is?

Cheers

Thanks for your swift reply.

I agree it may be internal, but have never dealt with one before. There is no fuel getting through to the carburettor, the filter is located back near the tank. In the manual it is shown in the engine compartment with a conventional fuel pump above the oil filter- but not in my car, so I assume it's beyond the filter in the tank. Any ideas on how to test the pump without removing tank?

Thanks

sounds like the pump relay has failed.to test the pump, you will have to find the wiring going to the pump and relay.the relay will be prob near or on the main fuse box.make up some temporary wires and feed the pump directly with temp wires.it should make the pump work.now do it just at the relay.not on the feed side.if again works its the relay.if it does not work, you have a break in the wiring[quite common].it does not show in haynes because these are carb engines.yours is injection requiring higher fuel pressure.

It wasn't a carburettor - it just looked like one. Gonna try what you suggested

Cheers

There is definitely a carb under the air filter and fuel lines which go back to a filter near the tank and then on to the tank itself but I cant find the pump! I'm going round to a local garage to try and solve this mystery, but am still open to input.

Thanks for your reply

yep CustardBoy, that's the fellow. Just don't know how to access fuel pump.

btw, this is Mrs StressPuppy, OH is on other pc looking for help
also, we are in Edinburgh too

Thanks for the info (Mrs here). Car is a couple of miles away, we totally broke down on the way to a camping trip. Are just trying to gather as much info here at the house then Mr is going out to hopefully deal with it in the morning.

Fingers crossed

right, its a single point injection[looks like a carb].your pump is either by the tank or inside it.just follow the fuel lines.i still think you have either a duff relay,a fuse problem ,broken wiring or duff pump.

On my Single point 1.6 the pump was in the engine bay near the furthest left Spark Plug below it.

Two black pipes should run from the carb, accross the rocker gasket cover to the fuel pump.

I think the I.E on your car stands for Electronic Injection where as my one is mechanical. I don't know where it would be located on your model but elec injections are usually underneath the car towards the back presumably near the fuel tank.

thanks for info have a planbut anybody know where the relay is to test it custard boy told me but still unsure (car broke down 2 miles away and not outside house) ok

Was your cars Symptoms to:

Quietly Stall at traffic lights on when stopped.

Quietly Stall when stopping or slowing down.

Idle a bit strange in Low Revs.

If so then chances are all you need to do is replace the Fuel Pump, if you can find it check to see if its leaking oil as my one was. Try to follow the Black Fuel Hoses, I'm sure the pump must be in the Engine bay towards the front almost clearly visible kind of near the Dip Stick if your dip stick is towards the left of teh engine block at the bottom.

Knew I had a fuel pump problem but was clarified when I took the car for an MOT.

MOT man said "your fuel pumps leaking oil" one of those things you don't need to ask "is that bad?"

good luck.

Well i have a 1.6 sie and my fuel pump is in the boot on the drivers side..maybe that will help...hope so..makes a change for me to be able to help someone instead of always asking!!
