Did you try start the car with the coolant frozen? You may have wrecked your water pump

I did yes as i forgot i didnt have antifreeze. I may take the waterpump out tomorrow and see if thats the problem
I think this is quite likely and by the sounds of things you may have overheated it risking the head gasket as well

Soon as the temperature light came on the engine was turned off and towed home so hopefully it has saved the gasket
Don't forget to have heater switched to max heat also (although I'm not sure if Punto is flat actuated, or value), but always a good thing to do anyways
God I must have been tired last night, must be a record for the largest number of spelling mistakes in the smallest post.
Glad Dave still understood it though

How do i check the waterpump. i understand there is a weep hole? And listen for the squeek?
Take it off. If the engine is turned with a frozen block the impeller will either be loose, or, more likely, shredded.
If the impeller is in bits it would be a good idea to try and account for all of them. Large bits going for a walk in the head is not good. If it did shred at start up most may be in the vicinity of the pump or water rail/lower hose.

Belt probably only goes with metal impellers.............. never encountered it yet!

Just checked the thermostat and it works fine so next step im guessing is the waterpump

Car is now fixed... As you can tell by the photo it was the water pump ... The impeller came out in 13 pieces!

Sounds exactly the same problem im having. ill take pump out tomorrow and look
Generally it's caused by old or low concentraion of anti-freeze. Block freezes round the impeller and shears all the blades off.

i thought i was looking at a thermostat and a new waterpump till you said new v old water pump..... my jaw dropped....
